Have put off posting this for ages, but can't any longer.

I want to give up horses for a while / longer (who knows), as life has taken a bit of a turn (positive one).

He's as good as gold, but not up to hard work any more due to some front feet issues. However, he's a perfect hack and fun ride horse, and would more than likely be up to the odd days hunting.

So, need thoughts on what to do with said horse. Permanent loan with a view to buy - or straightforward sell??:o

If I were you, and you are in a position that if it went tits up you could have him back.....I think loan with view to buy is a good option. However if there is no way you could have him back, even in the short term, then selling is your only option.

Just so that you can be sure he is in a good home. Sorry to hear you are giving up (well not sorry if the situation is a good one!!!). FWIW I only do sponsored rides, local jumping etc and the occasional day of hunting and I would leap at the chance to have your boy. He's lush :D

I'm sorry hun, I know it's been on your mind for a while. Would you be happy to do LWVTB? Just then you can make sure he is with the right person??

I guess you don't know anyone locally? Did you get anywhere with his breeders??

xxxx

Hmm, tricky one. But as they both involve selling in the long term, then perhaps immediate sale might be the most straightforward option. Either way you'll be vetting the homes, and permanent loan with a view to sale might attract the wrong sort of people (if they can't afford to buy outright they may not be able to afford proper care). That's not necessarily true but I'm trying to think of ways to narrow down the options!

AmyMay - what are his stats? A lady at my yard is looking for something safe and sane that she can hack out and do some fun rides with her daughter on - she tried something that was described as a complete plod a couple of weeks ago but it went mental with her, so she's understandably shaken and needs something lovely to get her confidence back. Just thought I could mention your lad to her, as I know she's keen to loan with a view to buy?

MizElz, he's a 10yr old full up 16.2 sportshorse. Strong in company mind you, so not sure he would suit.....

Thank you for that! Ah possibly not - and he'd probably be a bit big as I think she was looking nearer the 15.2 mark. I will keep eyes and ears open for you though - there are plenty of people looking for his type at the moment! He sounds lovely, I hope you find someone perfect for him xx

Full Loan with view to buy but thats if you actually will want him back.

If not, sell him but let the new owner have a trial run.

hey hun - I'm glad life is working out for you!

If I was you, I would sell. I know that alot of people say loan/view to buy but if you're being practical and had no emotional attachment you'd just sell - right? Loans can be a nightmare - they can come back lame, when you don't want them back etc. You know that I only loaned Ty as he's such a disaster and I feel he needs to be kept an eye on (pardon the pun). With Maddie she'll be fine and do well in the right home and has no major issues, which sounds like you're boy.

I really do wish you all the happiness in the world as I know life is taking an exciting new turn for you xxx

To be honest, I'd sell him, obviously I know you'll be very selective with who you let him go to anyway. But it removes the chances of someone rocking up in X amount of time and saying - here's horsey, by they way he's lame, underweight and wormy!

I too would sell him, unless he was your horse of a lifetime who you'd like back at some point to do x, y or z.

I think a loaned horse never comes back the same iyswim. We all ride differently, horses go differently to compensate for their riders position etc etc.

I know what I mean, even if my explanation leaves a little to be desired :o.

Plus, you've ummed and ahhed about selling him previously, maybe it's time to bite the bullet and do it, he's not getting any younger.

Good luck in whatever you choose to do and just think of all that time and money you're going to have spare :D.

I think I would sell after a short trial period, I'd only loan if it was someone I knew and trusted unless you 'might' want your boy back in the future.

I would think to just sell, I am sure you would find him a fab home. If in your position that is what I would do. Many people suggested I loaned out Ollie as he was unsuitable for me to ride but good for the more able rider. I just had thoughts of him coming back in awful condition, turning back up after a few months and having to find a new loan home again and also so many what if scenarios.

I decided to sell even with a huge emotional bond and 3 weeks on I do not regret it at all, it has not been half as bad as I thought.

Sorry you're thinking of giving up, I've done it several times in the past and always come back after a while when everything is so much more expensive, so, I would say sell the boy but keep what you can of your equipment, at least for a while if you have the space. At least then, even if it doesn't fit new horse, you have something to trade in if you do start back again

Yep, agree with others hun who have said sell him - if you're selling him either way I think a clean break is best & I know you'll find him the best home out there.
Don't be a stranger tho will you, we all still need your input with our wayward neds!!!!! :D

Hmm difficult one. Mine has had front feet issues, and I dont think I would ever sell him outright, it would be so easy for him to be buted up & sold on as a capable competition horse. I am just one of those silly people who buys for life. Loan with a view to buy sounds like the best idea to me. At least then you can see they get on with your horse & aren't going to run him into the ground or aggrevate any past issues.
I can see where people are coming from re selling him. Juts not something I would be capable of!
Good luck with whatever decision you come to. :)

Ditto above.

However I hope you find a nice home for him and things work out nicely which ever option you choose. :)

I second this. I would just sell on if your giving up for a while.
