I own a ISUZU Trooper Citation which is only 6 years old and has a very low mileage (about 30,000) and since I am semi-retired I dont need to tow as often (I need to save money desperatly ) and would like to buy something that will give me a higher mpg on short journeys plus lower insurance and have the power to tow when needed. I tow an IFOR Williams HB510 trailer with a 16.1 horse in it.

Any recommendations on a diesel powered vehicle that would do this.

I have a Kia Sorento XS (2.5l diesel manual) - which would tow what you're towing very comfortably. I get 32mpg out of it (but haven't yet done a long run in it) - that's all about town/commuting.

I LOVE this car so much, it's just brilliant. I've not done much towing in it yet (I only got my trailer a week ago) but what I have done so far it handled very easily.

Alternatively you could check out something like a Ford Mondeo estate? Not sure how much it can safely tow though...

What engine does your Trooper have? If its the 3.0 diesel you should be able to get 30+ mpg if your nice to it. Most vehicles that will tow a 510 well wont give you a lot better than that in my experience, even the estate cars. My Trooper gives me better MPG than our Saab 93 does.

My Trooper has a 3.1 engine but as I have to go back and forth to the horse twice a day and its only 3.5 miles each way it seems to be getting through too much fuel. As soon as the weather improves I will be cycling.

I was hoping that a Lighter vehicle smaller engine different insurance group would reduce my overheads a bit!!

I had the same problem but was commuting to work in the guzzling towing vehicle that did about 18 MPG and had to do 40 miles a day, a lot of maths later and a LOT of money wasted we decided to buy a little diesel car for me to use to get to work. We got a cheap Puegot 306 which does at least twice the MPG of the truck and I just use the 4x4 for towing. Even with insuring and taxing two vehicles I save a fortune!
