2weeks ago our car pretty much blew up on the M25 and we had to be towed home, this is bad enough but bare in mind that it wasn't a particularly cheap car (not that it matters), it is only just 3 years old and it is 6 weeks out of it's warranty. It has been well looked after, driven carefully and fully serviced. Well the garage has been looking into it and today came back to us with the news - it needs a new engine and turbo at a cost of £8-10K

I know it's just a car and no-one is hurt or ill, but all that money for in essence nothing. Looks like George will be on starvation rations

I know the feeling, the head gasket went on my car about a week after the warranty ran out, not quite as expensive as yours but as I was a student at the time it was about half of my student loan for the year!!

What a nightmare.
My OH's car died on Thurs but luckily he had a spare engine in our back garden, yes its a mini scrap yard.
What a pain its just out warranty, my lap top died a month after the warranty was out. You would think they would cut you a bit of slack.
 
If it is only just out of warranty it would be well worth contacting the manufacturer and asking them to contribute - say 50%.

The warranty is the minimum guarantee period but the car should be fit for purpose for a longer period than that, its just that after that you have to let them decide on an individual basis whether and how much they will contrib. In these circumstances they might well agree.

If they dont, contact Honest John or one of the other weekend newspaper motoring gurus, they have a lot of luck with negotiating this kind of thing. Given the circumstances its not chancing your luck, it shouldnt go from 100% guarantee on everything to nothing overnight so they do have a moral duty to contribute something.

I feel your pain - I had a turbo go on my Trooper a few years ago. Managed to find a bloke in a little garage who did the job at half the price of a bigger place, so shop around - it may not cost as much as you think

You'll just have to ride george to work instead of driving the stupid car! Tether him up outside work/shops, just like Jinny used to do with those ponies in those super books, with Shantih the arab!!

I have a friend who's clutch went after the warrenty ran out. He argued that it should have lasted longer (car not that old) and managed to get a substantial amount paid by the manufacturer.

With this sort of money involved it might be worth getting a solicitor if there is any chance?
 
I would take it up with the manufactures (even though it is out of warranty), surely a turbo is supposed to last more than 3yrs 6weeks??........................My brother had an Izuzu (brought 2nd hand), the turbo went on that (so well out of warranty), seems they had done a recall due to faulty turbos (but my brother car had missed it), anyway they replace the engine free of charge (brother had to pay for a few minor parts....gasket etc... about £300). Anyway worth a try, what have you got to lose? Good luck.
 
Would echo the other suggestions of contacting the manufacturer, followed by Honest John, then ringing round.

I feel your pain though - we've got the tractor & the lorry off sick atm (the lorry is 'fixed' but its oil warning alarm keeps going off), my car's just been svc'd & mot'd & o/h's is due a service.

Bl**dy vehicles... nothing but trouble. (But glad there's nothing wrong with George.)
 
The car is a citroen and it has only done 40,000 miles, so there is no way that the engine should have gone. We will definately be pursuing citroen for some of the costs.

As you say very glad George is ok, also glad the engine going didn't cause a big accident as we were in the fast lane of the motorway doing 70 at the time. So i'll try to look on the bright side

Google problems with your particular car,..... we had a Land Rover Disco and it had a massive engine failure.... due to a nut working loose in the oily part of the car!!!! Can you tell I dont do cars.....

Anyway because it was a manufacturers defect... they had to do it all for us for free... and that was out of warrantee too... so worth a bit of detective work as they are actually responsible for the car for 6 years for things that are not wear and tear or down to neglect!!!
 
My mums BMW died a couple of months ago after the computer stopped working. Typically the car was out of warranty by about 3 weeks. BMW did all the work (approx £2000) and only made my dad pay the labour costs (£120!) Pursue citroen relentlessly until they give in - it is possible

Oh GG that's awful! Poor, poor you!

Actually this whole thread has scared the living daylights out of me because my Trooper has now broken down! It went to the local garage today and they think that possibly the turbo has failed and possibly the fuel injectors but they aren't sure and its being towed to the main dealer tomorrow to be plugged into the Diagnostics. Its not an old car and is only just out of warranty (naturally). Its already on its 3rd set of injectors which were done under warranty so its going to cost thousands this time. It is such a crock of sh*t, my old trooper was fantastic and I sold it to friends and its now done 200k plus miles. This one has done 60k and has been pampered! God I hate cars.

I'm really interested to hear about the trooper turbo problem mentioned. Do you know what model this effected?

I agree you should contact the manufacturers, I am going to uf mine turns out to be major problems as expected

I echo everyone else in saying, pursue the manufactorers. Given the short period of time it's out of warrenty, I think you've got a good case that it's their responsibility.

I so know what thats like, after sept 11 I really thought live for the moment so I ordered a new Porche Boxster. Said car arrives and 10 months later the engine blew. They had to fly over a specialist from Germany and replace the engine at a cost of £ 14k. Thankgod it was under warranty.

In that experience expensive didn't mean good.

I think "car trouble" must be catching - a few weeks ago, I had to drive up to North Wales with my daughter for our holiday ( hubbie couldnt come with us at the last minute!) and the warning light for the Cam belt came on, so I spent the entire week trying not to drive much, and then had to crawl home in the slow lane behind all the lorries, praying the belt wouldnt snap and take the engine out with it - that was 7 hours of non stop driving!

Thank goodness we made it, and the belt was replaced.

Then about a week later, my husband was driving home, the head gaskett on his car went, he arrived back in the early hours of the morning on a break down truck, and we are still waiting to hear if the engine is a right off!

I hope you can sort this mess out, and get some of the financial help you should be entitled to - dont these people realise just how IMPORTANT a dressage saddle is!

8 to 10K? Is the car even worth that much?? Seems an awful lot to have to pay. I would certainly be contacting the manufacturer as it's so close to the warranty running out it's ridiculous!

I had problmes with my car last year - it didn't have a warranty due to its age (although not exactly old!). garage took forever to find what was the problem and fixed several things in their attempt to solve it. Eventually they stoped charging me for labour costs! They did fix it but then something else went wrong and, seeing as I had spent about £1K plus on it (some of the 'plus' was replacing the soft top and bonnet after my horses got into the stable yard and ripped said car apart!). it was going to cost me a whole lot more so I thought s*d it and traded it in there and then for a new car WITH warranty!

There's no way i would be prepared to spend what you've been quoted to fix it. Either they should do fix it as per the warranty or I'd just get rid!
 
Have you tried Car Transplants (search google) or similar. there are a lot of places that do reconditioned engines taken from accident damaged vehicles, well worth a look.
Any small independent garage would charge you a lot less than a dealership to refit it as well.
