so we are looking after this dog over xmas, had him many times before and he's fine just a bit mad/excitable.

he came last night and me & mum just went to bed as usual.
mum wakes up at 6am hears a noise so comes down stairs
wrapping paper everywhere.
presents chewed up everywhere.
not even just presents that had chocolate in,
he's chewed up books, a box that had a mug in,
a cath kidston set which I got my mum :(
ugh bloody dog

so angry. he's been shut in the kitchen now. both our other dogs were sitting in the corner of the living room cowering when my mum came downstairs ahaha bless them, knew it wasnt them because they have never done anything like that!

Unfortunately thats what dogs do, I would never leave mine unsupervised near presents on the floor, though very annoying I agree. You mention chocolates, I am sure you are aware of the risks of dogs eating chocolates, if it was more than just one or two I would suggest you ring your vet for advice.

its not really 'what dogs do' as have never had a problem with ours- even our food loving mental chocolate lab.
Just very upset as I spent a lot of money on my mum this year, im 17 and dont have a job so I saved up a lot to buy her presents.

we have no idea how many chocolates he ate because the chocolate presents were mostly from my mum's work so she didnt know what was in them- the boxes are in tiny peices so we cant tell how many, but he is not ill at the moment and we will call the vet if he does

poor you, and nice that you saved up to get your mum a present.

my labrador/doberman x ate my birthday chocloates, the whole box, when I was a kid, and no ill effects, they can be a problem, but I guess if he looks fine, I would not get overly concerned.

I hope some of the presents salvagable.

OK not all dogs, but if you leave something edible on the floor overnight with a dog there is a good chance it would be tempted. You did say he was mad/excitable so I would think he maybe got bored and thought the presents look fun. I can understand how upset you must be, maybe the dogs owner would contribute towards replacing the presents.
Can you tell from the pieces of box if they were dark or milk chocolates, if he is a small dog and he has eaten quite a lot of dark chocolate it really could be quite serious. Please keep a close eye on the dog.

How upsetting for you - hope you can salvage some of the presents and re-wrap them.

We have a young Border Collie and I know for sure he'd have done the same thing - probably not even waited till we went to bed! consequently this year we're not having a tree or any dog level decorations - its a bit like having a toddler... Everything needs to be out of reach!

Don't let it spoil your Christmas!

Luckily we didn't have a problem with our young lab. I shut the living room door and we both slept soundly. I think a dog in a strange environment, albeit, he has stayed with you before, would act in that way. I hope some of the presents can be salvaged and that you have a happy Christmas, despite the chaos.

we have had a lot of dogs over xmas before and none of them have touched the presents. its weird, he used to be really over weight and now he is almost underweight. the owners dont really walk him that much. he is a chocolate lab (ironically) we are trying to piece together the boxes now to see what he has eaten

we would have thought that the owners would have warned us before hand if they knew he did it, unless this is the first time. He comes to us a lot, in summer was every other weekend, he hates going home! thankyou :)

Where were the presents?
My dogs will happy stay amongst things like that, my rotti lay on the settee last night, huge bar a dairy milk to her left (easily in reach) presents everywhere. She simply won't touch things unless given them. My whippets would have had a feast;):D
I would however never leave a boarding dog like this A, I would not risk them opening chocolate and B, Even if they had been impeccable before I simply would not chance it, they are left securely contained in my kitchen area or my dog room , as suggested they are in a strange environment out of routine (even if visited before) its the nature of the beast.

If its a paying customer then I would not ask for a refund as you may risk them being more unhappy with their dog having access to chocolate (something that can make them ill/kill them) infact im affraid this would be my only concern at present, however if it was friend and you are simply looking after him as a favour I would be inclined to maybe ask if they could help replace the presents. (well I would not) but you should in the circumstance.
I hope you can salvage presents, prepare yourself for a rear end explosion if indeed he has scoffed alot of choc and keep an eye on him incase he gets poorly.

would never ask for a refund or help replacing the presents! dogs are unpredictable animals. we didnt think we would touch the presents, we were obviously wrong. he seems fine at the moment, obviously its going to be difficult getting him to the vets over xmas but his welfare is our main concern!

Which is why you should have not put the dog in a position of potential danger. If any of the chocolates were good quality the dog could already be beyond help.

How difficult is it to move parcels?

Too right, a mini bull terrier I bred died because her damn fool owner left a pound bar of dark cooking chocolate within reach,"oh she`s never done that before" the cry every time a dog dies.Blame yourself, and pray the dog is OK Merry Christmas.;)

we have blamed ourselves? who else's fault is it.

the dog is fine. we have worked out what he has eaten and it is not as much as we originally thought, although I know any chocolate can be dangerous.

its not difficult to move parcels. we didnt even THINK he would do something like this. it was a mistake, if we thought about it then we would have moved them!

Woah people - back off a bit. Hollieeb has already stated it is her responsibility and she knows it was a mistake to leave the dog with the presents. She is aware of the dangers of chocs and dogs and they have taken steps to ensure the dog is ok. No need to keep bashing her over the head with it - she just wanted a moan about her pressies getting chewed up!!!!

Hope you can salvage some presents from the mess and it doesnt spoil your Xmas

Thankyou! we have saved most of them but has just ruined the surprise for my mum as now she knows what they are!

Well I am very certain she was surprised at the way she found out what she was getting :D lol. Chin up, this time next year you will be laughing about it.

Ozzie my JRT would have unwrap the lot, though tends to open carefully and discard any that aren't squeeky toys (even dog treats remain unopened, but unwrapped). This is because his dam fool owner (me) thought it would be fun to let him unwrap his x-mas pressie 1 year :o....................now no pressie is safe!!! Last week re unwrapped a jumper I had brought for a friends birthday as I got interrupted mid wrapping by a phone call.

Wow obviously most people on the dog forum never make mistakes ever! (Partly why I usually just lurk nowadays as advice on here is often spoken with a pinch of righteousness ) anyway hope the dog is ok and it's a shame about the presents! It is frustrating when you taken the time and the money to do something nice!

Poor you , bet u were livid
Hope the dogs ok with eating choc ,my whippet ate a whole box if quality street one Easter including wrappers , luckily she passed them all through ,,she felt sorry for herself tho
I crate my two dogs overnite hence they would cause havoc lol
My whippets has killed some of Xmas decs already
We don't put any chocs on the tree or any choc presents we take way
Dogs eh !!

I don't think we are doing presents under the tree this year, I have a feeling that 6 month old Eddie the Beagle would be way to tempted by them. If there is trouble to be found a Beagle will find it LOL.

Hope your Christmas surprise spoiler is OK, little booger.

About time you posted some more pictures of that delightful young bu**er!
I really like him a lot!:D

Haha! Cheeky beasty - hope he didn't eat too much and you don't end up with another "present" on the carpet later :o
You have to laugh in the end.. dogs were born to do naughty things like this. Baxter is pretty well behaved but I'm not sure he would be very restrained if I left him at a friends house with an inviting pile of presents on the floor.

I have no presents under the tree this year, all out of reach from my year old dobermann. she hasn't bothered about the tree or the baubles but i got a present from a friend yesterday and put it under but right at the back so it wasn't even that visible, i was in the kitchen and heard a rustling noise, by the time i got there she had unwrapped it. cheeky monkey.
sorry about your presents op, it won't ruin your christmas, just re-wrap and mum will still look surprised, nothing wrong with a wee bit of forgetfulness
in that situation. x

well 24 hours later and he seem's fine! will keep an eye on him though.

we didnt think about moving presents because our lab is food obsessed and he doesn't touch them! ah well these things happen!

glad to hear all is well

I had my last dog for 14 years, for 13 christmas's she didn't touch a thing under the tree or a chocolate on the tree, last christmas she ate the chocolates and opened all the presents,

Luckily there were only a few chocolates and as I'm a white chocolate fan she wasn't at a huge risk of chocolate poisoning, sadly we lost Jazz in April and as I now have a pup, I've taken no risks this year, we have a smaller tree, up high, no chocolates and prezzies are out of reach ... Spampot has still managed to steal her own prezzies tho, as I was wrapping them I looked up and she's sat there cute as a button with Santa in her mouth lol
