An old employer who I had a lot of respect for unexpectedly passed away. I won’t be able to make it home to the funeral and I wanted to somehow send my condolences or just something to show I care and I’m sorry for his wife and family’s loss. Of course I could send flowers but any other ideas? He was a long time horse trainer and a very good man. Any ideas welcome please

A card with a letter saying how he touched your life and the memories you have of him would mean a lot. I learnt so much about my brothers life after he died from the people he had taught and researched with. It gave me such an insight into the person that he was.
The period after a bereavement is hectic with visitors and organising, and I've never forgotten the thoughtfulness of people who arrived with homemade meals and cakes for visitors. We even had bags of groceries left anonymously at the door, because we didn't have time to shop. Maybe you could post a little hamper or similar. Small acts of kindness are incredibly comforting after bereavement.

Another vote for a card and handwritten note. Something that can be kept and revisited if wanted.
