I want to show my welsh cob.

I have a new beastie Tom, who I want to show in hand, but I am a bit of a novice when it come to the "right thing to do" when it come to showing. Does he wear a bridle or a white halter, do I pull his mane which is fairly long. Can he go in unshod as he doesn't need shoes on so I'm not shoeing him at the moment. I think he's lovely so I want to show him off but want to do it to the best of his abilities and don't want to let him down by doing the wrong thing.

Whilst natives should be shown au natural, this takes a whole new meaning when it comes to showing a welsh! Pull the mane, you can pull the top of the tail, taper the tail to a point...they are more made up than Katie Price

how short would you pull it? Its about 10" long at the moment. Do you leave the feathers untouched or do they need thinning?

Length really depends on his neck, if he has a thick cresty neck he will be able to carry off a longer mane, however if he is lacking a little topline a shorter mane will help the image. generally you don't want to go much shorter than 5/6 inches.

Feathers should be left, if he has much above the knee it can be a good idea to trim that, just gives a cleaner line.

Geldings are also perfectly acceptable to be shown in bridles. Either an in-hand ridle, a plain snaffle bridle with a lead rein not normal riding reins or a double/pelham bridle with riding reins on. No need to shoe if you don't want to. And yes to all the pulling, trimming, faffing and general un-nativfying of your pony
