How about barbed wire on the door? Or perhaps all the way round the stable so he stands in the middle quivering, wondering when the it's next going to bite
Mairi's method is not that different to the idea of using an electric collar on a dog who barks/runs off/eats nasties etc.
But there again, there are many on here who think that is sheer cruelty, too
Personally, I cant see a problem - as some have said, the horse has a choice. It is no different to letting a persistent child touch a heated grill - my mum did this to me when I refused to keep my fingers to myself, and after being burnt I never did it again!
The horse doesnt do it anymore - so lesson learnt.
It didnt have to bite the door - but it chose to and has now learnt its lesson.
As someone else said - how is this different to electric in fields??
As for the person involved with horse welfare - maybe you should send him to all the big affiliated BSJA shows in the uk where the stallions have their doors wired up with electric wire run off batteries to keep them in the bloody things.
What worried me was that you stated that I was bloody evil this evening ... and thoroughly enjoyed it
The latter comment shows a worrying attitude.
For the record I wouldn't dream of using stable mirrors, and have used some pretty rude descriptions to my own nag at times. Anyway lets just leave it that I'd never leave him on a yard where I became aware of any attitude/actions such as yours.
My mare bites her electric fence for kicks. Electric fences do not hurt a horse, they shock them. Just the same as a smack etc. Seriously, get over yourselves. I am personally much more concerned for horses who actually are being abused, ie beaten and starved etc.
Not all horses crib just because they are bored or distressed. They also do it for attention.
I had someone else's stallion staying here for one night. He was in a corral adjoining the field where my very placid stallion and his mares lived. Well the visiting stallion went for my stallion and of course my stallion retaliated along with all my mares trying to gang up on the newbie ... so I had to use electric tape as an overnight temporary stopgap, to stop them from being able to touch noses. Well this visiting stallion LOVED zapping himself with the electric tape!
I mean REALLY loved it!
Dirty little cretin, was w*nking on it ... with his willie touching it
. In all my years with horses, I had never seen that in my life before, although I have also met some horses who actually seem to enjoy the buzz from low-energy electric fences.

lmao at that...drr boo you, ofcourse its a turn on..silly!
Ladyfresha. And anyone one else with same opinion, horses don't crib, windsuck, run their teeth up and down a stable door or kick the walls because they are doing it for attention. They are do it because they are physically or mentally distressed and have not or are not being allowed to be what they are...horses.
Christmas Carol - My boss has a cribber. She's out on 15 acres with a herd, she is a brood mare and she the vet checks her very often. She is happy, healthy, well covered and generally lives as naturally as a horse in this day and age can...
... she cribs on the fenceline.
I don't know the reason for this. I do know Boss has tried a good few ways to stop her (from collar, supplements, vinegar, different feeds etc.) The mare did it even when she was a competition horse and when she was retired from competion and was a happy hacker.
I can't think why, maybe habit. But whatever it is, she's not physically or mentally distressed as far as my experienced boss, qualified vets or little old me are concerned.

P.s Mairi - I would trust you with all of my "precious" invalids. If you fancy them for free, i'm sure they would thrive.
I'll send you three, unfortunately I am guilty of molly coddling the 4th. She's put up with ten years of electrocutions and abuse so I think she now deserves to live in a safe room with some bean bags.
The other 3 are opinionated, useless invalids (though loveable all the same!).
JM07 - You can have them if you promise to keep up with their routine of daily verbal abuse including constant reminders that they are fat and useless.

My old Fell Pony would kick the door for attention, she would stop as soon as she got the attention. She def didn't have any mental or physical problems, apart from a big head from all the attention she got!
Seeing as my foal is getting very bolshy and has bitten me several times now, you have just inspired me, if I get some overalls, stitch insulators to it and battery power myself with tape through the insulators like tinsel on a christmas tree - this will deter the little b*gger from hurting me then?
Patent being filed for the anti-bite suit as we speak!
i can understand why you did it - but if i found out that a YM did this (and hated my horse so much!) without my knowing i would be straight out of there. In my mind do what you want to your own horse but not to liveries. What happens if it went up and injured itself, how would you explain that?
Who said I "hated the horse"? He irritates the life out of me but "hate" is a huge word that I dont know the meaning of. Please, calm down, you are going a bit over board with your judgement (others included). You and your like are begining to make me wish Id shot the bugger, then yes, you would have had something to whinge about. Get real
