I was mortified!!

I walked my dog past a farm in the village.We have walked past it countless times and never had a problem.
Unfortunaltey this time there were 2 chickens out on the road and well he saw them before I did

He managed to catch one of them, oh my god it was like something out of a cartoon

feathers everywhere

It got away thank god.
I then had to tie the dog up and look for the hen. It had gone to the hen house and was wandering round with all the others like normal but a bit bald

I found the farmers wife and apologised profusely, and offered to replace it if it died of the shock

She was ok about it, said its one of those things and at least I was honest about it as many aren't!
I really was mortified! It all happened in seconds, he was in big trouble once I had picked the feathers out of his mouth

At least it got away.
Ours live with chickens so they know to ignore them but it was just a chance happening with your dog.
Glad the owner was OK with you.

Hmmm, I have had two chicken incidents over the years...

One time I was at a friends livery yard, walked through an archway into the yard (dogs both on leads!) and a chicken literally jumped out in front of us

It didnt live very long, cue lots of feathers and lots of small children looking on in horror

The other time I left my dogs with an a**ehole ex-BF for 3 days whilst I groomed at MK3DE - he let them out, and my lurcher got the ex-BF's brothers prize rooster

I was allowed to let my dalmation run round my friends field. She came back with a dead chicken.Thought she had picked up a dead one - we did have a lot of foxes. Oops a bit naive(sp) on my part, when she came back with another one which was still alive I knew we had a problem. I took a slow walk up to the house where the chickens had come from and explained my dogs part in their undoing. She was very understanding fortunately.

Well im glad its not just me it happens too! All that was going through my head (apart from oh sh*t) was what if I had to put it out of its misery if it didn't get away and he didn't finish it off!

How embarassing.

Be careful though. A couple of houses near our yard have put up signs with a photo of a ripped up chicken and a sign saying "Trespassing dogs will be shot"

Hes never done anything like that before. Hes very good with sheep as hes been around them since he was a puppy, as they used to escape into the garden! He had never seen chickens until then. But I won't be going past there again and will stick to the woods!

Must admit, I let mine get on with it when they catch something as I know they will be more efficient than me

Although there was a vet present during the livery yard incident, who casually wandered over to confirm the chicken was dead

It's one of those things that happens now and then even with the most well trained and behaved dog. It goes to show that they are only ever one step away from reverting to wild and instinct always wins over domestication, which isn't a bad thing. How boring would dogs be if they just bowed to our will 100%

I had an incident like this many years ago when my MinPin was a pup. She rodeo'd on a chicken that was larger than herself. My sister wasn't too amused, who owned the chicken...and the chicken wasn't harmed in any way (not even a lost feather) so I have to admit, we all laughed about it after. But still...a bit embarassing to have to admit that your dog attacked another animal!
