I was shocked and saddened to hear of a 28 year old pony...

who was trimmed by my EP for the first time in its life yesterday. It has been owned by the same people for 27 years.... and it was the first time they got it trimmed. My EP also made them get a vet out for the first time as it has a massive tumour.

The vet thought it had broken a leg when he arrived because of its leg conformation (due to the flare of the hoof). The saddest thing? ...... was that these people were the kindest people you could meet but so ignorant of its needs. They just didnt have a clue...... apparently its feed consisted of toast... hopefully it will now be happier for the rest of its days being trimmed and regularly treated. I just didnt think these things actually happened anymore.

Well the guy who owned it was almost proud that it hadnt needed 'any treatment' for the 27 years they had owned it. They didnt even know it was a stallion. The hooves were 7 inches long...... and thats why the vet thought its leg was broken due to the way the leg was now angled. It was very sad. I saw the pics today.

I hope the vet reported them, they should normally and can, it is in their remit. Ignorance is no excuse for neglect.

It is not ususual for great acts of unkindness and cruelty to animals to be undertaken by very kind people who are simply ignorant of the facts. This is not a valid excuse in my mind, its like the people who are cruel by over feeding their animals, it is just as cruel to have an overweight horse as it is an underweight animal.
