My friend and I went to Bennington yesterday to do one of the driving taster days. I had an amazing time! I have never met such a lot of kind, generous people who are so passionate about what they do.

Some of the harnessing up etc I was already ok with, but having never driven anything bigger than a small shetland I got to drive some 14.2hhs. Unlike riding where at this stage I would still be walking on a lead rein, we got to go out on former and current international driving ponies, and have a go at cones and obstacles.

This is me driving a 28yr old pony who is used as a patent safety for anyone learning. He had been very steady and sedate until I got up and then he was off like a rocket  He had to be made to walk and come down a gear!

No idea why we are black and white and the grass is green!

And this is Sarah. Apparently if you are involved in driving you know Sarah.

I loved her and didnt want to get off when I was driving her. I got to take her for a blast down the other end of the field. Shes so keen and forward and clearly loves her job. I'm hoping mine is like her, he seems to be so far, although not sure he will be an international trials pony :p

I think the look on my face says it all here

Everyone else had a go at backstepping with a tandem but my back wont stand up to anything like that. Luckily for me my friend who was with me is going to backstep for me, so she went twice so she could get a really good feel for it.

We also got to look round the factory and see how they make the carriages. I can see now why they are so expensive. It takes a team two weeks on average to make one!

So now I've had my head turned and am wondering which limb/organ I can sell to get myself a marathon vehicle

I'll hopefully get Leo put to next weekend and can come back to earth driving my little two wheel exercise cart and my ex traveller pony :p

Sarah (and Pippy) in Austria :) We travelled out there together sharing a 3.5 tonne box (driven by a transporter with me as a groom), so yup, I know her :) Lovely facility there :) Did my UKCC2 there.

Sue's lovely, and I'm on my third Bennington (all second hand...) and the pony I broke last year has one too. I love them so much that I struggle to drive much else :D
I'd send anyone driving! Totally addictive and fabulous fun!

She looks like your average ordinary bay pony when shes standing half asleep, but shes a different pony in harness! I loved her and feel honoured to have had the chance to drive her :)

Shes sent me away with strict instructions to stop faffing about and get going with mine, and I'm to send her photos to prove it

I love driving too. I drive my Highland pony to a Bennington Overlander which is perfect for us as we go adventuring. I would recommend it to anyone especially if you are finding too many aches and pains with riding. That advice to 'stop faffing' is the best you can get. Do all the training and prep with your pony then find an expert quiet trainer to get them put to and going safely. Those few weeks will stand you in good stead for years of fun to come.

Shaun did a try driving day at Bennington back in December. Having never done it before, he's now backstepping for an Australian Advanced Single Horse carriage driver all over the country and if off to Holland next month for his first Advanced international!! I highly recommend it as he loves every second!

Sounds like a wonderful day OP

If anyone has a bit of spare time and they have a driving for the disabled arrangement in their area ask if they need a volunteer,
you learn so much, get to drive in lovely places (Highclere grounds was one of ours on occasions), meet a great bunch of people, gives you an opportunity to drive various ponies/horses and maybe even put your horse/pony forward to pass the various tests to qualify for a driving for the disabled equine which is a great experience
