We are having our lil 35 year old boy PTS this morning.

He drastically dropped weight over the last month and we just couldn't keep it on.....

The vet came out on Wed and took a few blood samples and the like, and said his heart is weak and fast...and he didn't like that...

The results came back pretty good actually, no worm problems (I should hope not!) his liver and kidneys and other organs show no problems, which is pretty good for a boy his age!

The diagnosis then is that hs heart if failing.....

I don't want him to suffer anymore, I don't want to find him in a muddy spot in winter unable to get up, so we made The Choice for him....

We had him for 3 years, took him on knowing this day would come soon....but I'm so glad we did. He was a mardy grump when we got him, didn't think twice about kicking us or biting us! Now, he's a lovely little thing and we love him lots....

His old owners are insisting on paying for everything (we didn't expect them to so thats nice) and he is being cremated so they can scatter his ashes in their orchard....

They didn't expect him to last with us as long as he did! We changed him onto No Bute Premium for his stiff old joints, and I have to say, this stuff is amazing, it turned him around for these last three years..

Once this is done, I'm taking my son away for a few days in the caravan, to a big campsite with lots of things going on to keep our minds off it!

What a brave and loving decision you have made. Even when you know it is the right thing to do, it is still so hard. {{{{{hugs}}}}
RIP little pony.

Vet has just called, so going down to the field soon, my husband is meeting me there, and we will see it through together.

I'll miss my little old boy....

Ok, the tears have started now....so I best go and get on with things.....

Best thing for your horse, but the hardest for you. I hope all goes as well as it can, 35 is a grand age, he must have been well looked after in his last years and obviously loved.

You should be proud of yourself for making such a heartbreaking decision for all the right reasons. You should be proud of yourself for making the last few years of an old pony's likfe comfortable and loved. You should be proud of yourself for the excellent example you are setting for your son.

My thoughts are with you, RIP pony. :(

What a lucky pony that you came along at that age and gave him a happy safe last 3 years, a lot of people wouldnt have considered taking a pony on at that age and i admire you for doing that.
I can sympathize with you my old girl was pts on saturday and it was the most heartbreaking thing.
I am devastated and miss her so much but driving home after i felt such a huge wave of relief that i knew in my heart i had done the right thing for her.
Its the hardest but kindest most selfless decision.
I am thinking of you right now and hurting with you. I think i struggled more the following day when everyone carried on as normal
So please PM me if you want someone to sound off at, talk to or just because typing it all down gets it out of your system a bit.
I am thinking of you and hurting with you right now
Much love and hugs- RIP little pony xxxx

Thanks for all your good wishes...

It went as well as can be expected, my vet and the student who was with him were great, so was the chap who came to pick him up.....

I'm glad the rain stopped and the sun came out for his last few minutes, and it was very peaceful and dignified.

RIP Gino.....

A very brave decision, its never easy I think no matter what the circumstances are.
Sounds like he was much loved in his final days, I hope it went as ok today as it possibly could, rip little one x

There should be more people willing to take horses on in their twilight years like yourself, hold your head high knowing you did a noble and courageous thing and that he will be looking down on you peacefully.

Go celebrate his life, 35 is a brilliant age!! Dont be sad, hes probably had a hoot whilst with you!!!! Think of all the good times and funny stories he would have to tell.

Big love x x x
