I wonder how how they got this pic?!

Breeze Mum, yes I see your point and wholeheartedly agree.

As for my boy Micky, he died a long time ago in 1998 at the age of 6, it was all very sad at the time. He bucked whilst playing in the field with his mates and upon landing his leg went under him and all his body weight went down on it.... very luckily for him (if you can call it that) my friend happened to be in the field trying to catch her horse for a lesson and saw it happen. When she couldn't raise the horse to his feet she called the YO and when he managed to stand him up it was obvious to see it was a vets job. Poor Micky. If Jo hadn't been there it would have been another two/three hours before he was found.

Actually yes - my 30 + year old mare broke her shoulder in the field and obviously had to be put to sleep in my presence.
That doesn't mean I want to look at someone else's pain and grief without a warning first thanks.

I had avoided all the other stuff on here about Cavvy (mainly because I look on here at work and we cannot see pics or videos) and wasn't happy to see that picture when I followed the link. And for the record I'm neither squeemish or a softie but I don't enjoy seeing any animal in pain.

I don't think anyone is being ott or melodramatic, merely putting our thoughts across that any photo showing any suffering (and no one can say Mary appears happy and merry in this photo) should be clearly titled. I can't understand your tone of annoyance either to be honest.

I have seen many horrendous sights in my life both animal and human, doesn't mean I want to stumble upon some by following a seemingly innocent link whilst having my toast and coffee of a morning.

I suppose the issue is choice - there was absolutely nothing to say it was a photo of Mary/CAC, never mind of the incident itself.

Fine, it is only a photo, great. But people have a right to choose for themselves if they see it or not. All that was needed were the words "Photo of CAC after injury" or something similar.

I think many people here are overreacting big time, and for what it is worth, I agree with Applecart totally.

I KNEW, the minute the OP posted this, what the picture would be of; I didnt need to see it - I just knew with all the events of the past few days that it could only be one thing. The photo is not graphic - if you want graphic, there are many Google searches which can be performed which will truly make you retch

It seems we have some highly sensitive souls on this forum...I just think it is a sad day when everything needs to be clearly labelled

I'm sure VictoriaEDT did not post this for people to be shocked by it; most of us had already seen the image on Sunday night anyway - I read this post simply as a 'how can they have published this when it seemed to have been taken down?' question...

Maybe I'm terribly naive, but the subject saying 'I wonder how they got this pic?' I honestly thought it was going to be some lovely nature pic of a shot that would be really hard to take!
crazy.gif

I'm no softy, we're farmers so see 'life and death' all the time, but I would have liked the choice to have viewed this pic by the description being more accurate. I would have then chosen not to view. Its not so much the fact the pictures on here, more we didn't know till it was too late what it was about.

Not highly sensitive - I just don't go seeking out pictures of injured horses to look at. And as for knowing what the content was - I wish I was psychic (sp?) like you

Ah well I guess some people's opinions are more welcome than others. This place does make me sigh sometimes.

Toddles off until Monday when it will all have blown over anyway.....

Point taken, but when the actual link itself contains 'telegraph' and 'equestrian', did you not think differently then? I know I always look to see what the link actually says before I click it...and those two words were another huge giveaway for me - as I would imagine they would be for anyone who has either been on here or read other types of horsey news from the past 4/5 days...

It's life. These things happen. Why watch/support/talk about the sport if you cannot cope when things go wrong? If the picture had been horrifically graphic I may have understood all this negative reaction, but really all it depicts is what we knew about the incident already. As someone else has already said here, the media prey on images like this all the time - it is how they sell papers. And we see enough images of starving children, of people injured at war, of dogs attacked by yobs etc. And, as I said in my previous post, the word 'equestrian' was mentioned in the link, if you had taken care to look before clicking. There is nothing 'psychic' about reading prior to acting!

wasnt there a link the other day complaining the event had got no coverage? well now it has.
oh and getty images or their spokesperson will have rung all the papers when they ralised what they had and offered the picture to them. taking it off their web site was just to keep the peace.

QR

I also think people have overreacted. It is a sad and poignant photo, but I would not have considered it 'graphic' enough to warrant a warning necessarily.

I also don't think it is right to demonise the photographer who was just there doing his job. Journalists all over the world photograph plenty more distressing scenes every day so that we can all keep abreast of world affairs. Photos of war casualties, crime scenes, terrible poverty etc appear in papers all the time... should those be 'banned'? I don't think so, we are very lucky to have such freedom in our press, not everyone in this world has!

I appreciate that people are upset, but there is a bigger picture and I for one would rather keep my eyes open than shut them.

I agree. I don't find the photo particularly distressing. It is sad certainly, but all you can see is the horse holding his back leg up, it definitely isn't a graphic image.

QR - Yes the photo is very sad but I don't think it's graphic enough to warrant this reaction. I don't remember people getting so up in arms when the video clip of Amy Tryon was posted on here repeatedly. The OP only posted a link to the photo, it is the individual's choice to open that link. I also thought it was fairly obvious from the words in the link what the photo in question might be.

sorry but how do you get from telegraph/equestrianism in a link to definitely being about cavvy and THAT picture of him?? It could have been anything from the heading on the post, it actually crossed my mind it was something to do with Greenwich and 2012 in fact.

I don't think (again) that anyone has said it is graphic, or is moaning about being wimpy etc etc, but I think no one particularly wanted to see this picture again and be reminded of how we all felt on Sunday when we first saw it. I do not see how that aspect of this in itself is so annoying to people.

As for Amy Tryon? I was not on the forum then so can't speak for what happened and I haven't seen any footage that you are referring to. However, had it been properly headed, I would not have gone to view it.

I hadn't seen any pics or video of the incident until now, in the grand scheme of things the pic is not particulary graphic. Without knowing what had happened you wouldn't have been able to tell from the photo. Personally i found the pics of the horse at Badminton that got impaled on the flag post and pics of rotationals much more upsetting. What happened to Cavy is tragic, but unfortunately he appears to be yet another fatallity in a high risk sport.

Not all of us can.

If she asked this question because she could not see it then i apologise, it worked OK for me so didn't realise that it may not work for all, but if she could see it, then i stand by what i said.

I could see the picture i just think everyone is totally going ott all you have to do is watch the news or any tv and we see images far far worse than this one and no one gets their haunches up over those.
Fact is it happened, the picture is not bad at all yes its sad but not really graphic!
She took the horse there she had to be aware of the risks.

Ditto, Ive seen worse photos posted than that. I understand that none of us want to see animals in pain, but i find it hard to believe none of you watch the tv? None of them have warnings.

As regards the photo, it is simply photojournalism. It's hard to look at for many of us, because we recognise and empathise with what pain it portrays. Removing that, it is no different to the photos of grieving people by the wall of photographs after 9/11, people in war zones, bodies on the news, graphics of baby P, etc.
I find it hard to look at, and after seeing it once have no desire to do so again. But, as a demonstration of what a rider feels in such a situation, it has a validity in the archives. It demonstrates totally the despair involved. Mary's body language is heartbreaking and gutwrenching, and tells a story. And if that goes some way to dispelling the non-horsey public thoughts that horses are merely our tools for pleasure, then it will have hopefully justified the publishing.
If we ban photojournalism on the realms of upsetting people, there would be no archives whatsoever, and that would be a travesty.

Some VERY good points there; I just hope that people take note, because you have got it spot on!

Sorry guys, I ahvent been on here since I posted and cant edit it now.
To those who didnt want to see it, I am sorry it upset you but I just thought that seeing it was published in the telegraph for the world to see it wouldnt offend.
Sorry!

My initial question was whether the telegraph got the pic off the forum from Getty anyway and if they did they were quick off the mark as it wasnt on here for long.
Personally, although what happened is absolutely heartbraking for Mary/Cavvy and his contacts, i didnt find the photo that distressing (only Marys reaction more than anything). If it was perceived as being unsuitable then it would not have been published in national press. However, I should have put what was in the link so apologies.

It was taken by Stu Forster of Getty Images, the only person to carry on shooting when all the others stopped. He's now making money out of it. Nice chap.

[/ QUOTE ]
Blimey, would you stop journalists taking photos of warzones/ famine/ natural disasters? I think this pic is FAR less horrible than the sequence of photos featured in the Daily Mail showing Caroline Pratt's death. Or is it OK because a horse didn't die on that occasion? Honestly, I'm sure the photographer has some MUCH more gruesome photos that he chose not to put on the internet out of tact.

No offence taken, yes itis a sad sight but one a lot of us will witness in person at these horse events, its a dangerous sport that unfortunately comes with tragic accidents just like in horse racing.

We all know what happened and of course are very shocked and deeply upset and feel for Mary but this was a photo of what goes on, all those spectators saw it happen, I don't see what difference it makes publishing a photo of what everyone else saw and yes there is much more distressing photo's of cruelty and devastation in the world.

If anything if paints a true picture of the sport, the up and downs and tears and upset when it goes wrong.

I remember listening to a talk by Bill Nack, a famous racing journalist in the USA, who said that there were hundreds of complaints to the New York Times about a picture of a horse which continued to try to run with a shattered leg.
There were hardly any about the horrific picture of the burned and hanged bodies of abductees in Iraq in the same month.

As for the photographer who 'carried on shooting'....that's what they are supposed to do, sorry.
