I was sitting in the lunch room at work today, eating a chocolate bar and popping pills for my bad back, when it hit me "Why do we have such high standards for our horses, but such low standards for ourselves?"

I have a bad back, a belly (not fat by any stretch of the imagination), a tooth that needs looking at and shoes that rub. We wouldn't (or rather shouldn't) let that happen to our horses, so why oh why do we let it happen to ourselves? :P

(P.s this is meant to be a lighthearted thread, if it wasn't clear ;))

I suppose because we can consciously make the decision to sort ourselves out, but the horse relies on us to help them, so we do it because they can't exactly ring up the vet/farrier/dentist etc and say 'help me' :p

I know what you mean though, I'm slightly broken as my shoulder is causing me lots of problems although I did get my act together and it's being treated (although failing to respond atm :/) but little things I won't go to the doctors over. If I was a horse I'd want someone to look after me though :)

Because I can justify buying something that fits for my horses, I can also justify feeding them correctly, I can also justify exercising them. Otherwise it will cost more in the long run surely? The problem is, I run out of money, time and reasons to justify feeding, clothing and exercising myself!

Sure something is tilted in the wrong direction here - scales are def tipped on the side of the horses, but then, when they cost so much to begin with, how can I not give them that 'extra?'

Anyhows, that's how I put it to the other half! Doesn't always win, but its a great argument when it comes to his horse! Then I can get my hair cut and use his credit card!!! lol!

Hmm think Rhino has it there:D

I know for sure if my dog had been as ill as I am for as long as I have been, he'd have been at the vets long since!

Because we are so busy looking after our horses every whim and worrying about them constantly, we don't have any time left to think of ourselves let alone do anything!

My vet very kindly pointed out that if a horse had the same long term illness I have it would have pts a long time ago.
People quite often comment on how I wouldn't expect a horse to do as much as I expect of myself.
