Instead of ranting I am inventing a rule so peace can be restored -

If you compete at 4* you can only do 3 & 4 * comps
If you compete at 3* you can only do 2 & 3 * comps
if you compete at 2* you can only do 1 & 2 * comps

i.e stop competing your bloody 4* horse (which is going to Burghley) in my section, there you go. Much happier now.

Any other rules anyone would like me to put forward to BE / FEI :)

Got to admit that one of my most satisfying results was to finish higher than a British team member after she had blocked both the show jump warm up and the cross country warm up telling her fan club how her horse was related to her best horse. :)

Certainly was! I paid £1600 for mine and backed and trained him myself with no experience at BE at all. Her 'smart' (clue :) ) horse was probably five times the price and she had Olympic experience and national squad training.

I still fall asleep smiling about it many years later zzzzzz.

Good luck at Somerford, it's my local. I was actually the first person ever to run over the Novice course when it was built.

Wow, certainly something to smile about! We are very lucky to stable at Somerford so eventing at home is something of a luxury this weekend. Don't know whether I would be brave enough to be the first Guinea pig on course though, well done you!

I was having a very similar rant yesterday about the 1* I was in. The class had 95 entries and was filled with Olympic and professional riders which means it is almost impossible to get placed. Everyone in the top 10 was a professional rider and hardly any amateurs made it into the top 20.
Obviously this is an incentive to keep practising to keep up with the big boys but sometimes there are not enough hours in the day to practise as much as they do.
I do think it would be more fair to have different sections ie. one for professionals and one for amateurs like at Gatcombe Festival with the Corinthian cup and the normal novice class. It would cost them no more but would give people who do it for a hobby and can't afford to spend tens of thousands of pounds on horses a better chance and not feeling like you have wasted hundreds of pounds on a pointless entry.

Move to Ireland :)

Sportsmans classes from 90cm to 1* for amateurs...

One of my best days out was galloping past Virginia Leng and sailing over the fence that she had just been dumped at.

It may have been Pre-Novice and she may have been riding a baby, BUT in my head she was on her 4* horse.....
