Somone on here who's name i cannot remember and cannot remember which thread i saw it on, it was about Napping, they said they used a nicely nicely approach, like "oh wow arent u brave" "see how clever u are" etc....my mare Naps, and i'd tried everything from getting off, to kicking her one, reinforcing with a crop, spinning her in circles, sitting for hours etc.....not once had it occured to me to talk to her like a small child that was frightened, tried it today, and after a couple of come on, good girls, arent u good, oh well done's she went past the scary invisable thing that stops her leaving the yard alone.....so who ever it was, thanks!! i tried it 2 or 3 times today, each time i got a spin and a rear and a squeal, repeated the above and out we went happily, without me sweating and stressed, and her sweaty and stressed! thanks :)

Good News ! I must admit I sound like a complete twit when mine spooks and wont go past something ! did not realise a dog walker was behind me once !!! but hey it works - its all to do with the voice for them which also calms yourself down aswel.

Brilliant - i do it with my cob and it works too.
I was told not to do it - but i know my horse and if i anticipate a "scarey moment" I will talk him through it, both in hand and when riding.
It certainly works for us - all horses are different and you get to know what works for your horse - so so pleased for you!

Yep, that same technique works well with my occasionally spooky and nappy horse. I just witter away to him if i spot something that might spook him and he generally doesn't notice now other than tense up a wee bit. i just tell him what a wee star he is/ or wee dafty if he does start to spook and laugh him out of it.

Think people along my road think i'm nuts :)

Brilliant. Singing nursery rhymes works wonders too....especially wheels on a bus! (Not sure who it relaxes more, but it works!!).

i think i thought that niceness would be rewarding her naughtyness, i never really considered it'd be helping her be less scared......was strange but it work, and i was so happy as she trotted past a further 2 or 3 times not batting an eyelid at the scary invisible monster.
