Just been browsing through the picture gallery and stumbled across a post for chestnuts, some lovely looking horses posted

But made me think what are peoples experiences with chestnut mares?

The only chestnut mare I have ever known was a complete nutter, knocked down a wall once when she was on one!!

Do you think its harder to sell a chestnut mare due to the old wifes tales surronding them?
 
No, they're not all nutters! Some can be a bit quirky or sensitive but some are very calm aswell. Most of my favourite horses are chesnut mares! I think they tend to have a lot of character.
 
My bad knees are named after the two chestnut TB fillies who made them bad - Red Rebecca and Heavenly Lady (the latter was NOT well named!!

) But they were great fillies and I won a lot of money on them - they just require a bit more understanding than most! With Heavenly Lady, I ONLY backed her if she tried to kill the farrier on race mornings - if she behaved, I kept my money in my pocket! It was foolproof!

I have 3 chestnut mares now, 2 x RID and 1 x ISH. They're sweeties - although one of the RIDs DID play my OH up SO badly out hunting that she is now a brood mare! But they're all horses you ASK to do something - try shoving them around and you'll come off very much the loser!
 
i had 1 really lovely easy one and one who was a bit of a nightmare, nothing to do with her colour though imho. i've had bay geldings who were more difficult, than the chestnut mares, fwiw..
yes, i do think they're probably harder to sell though, or harder to get a good price for.
 
Having owned mother and two daughters all 3 chestnuts. Welsh then x with arab wonderful 2nd x with thoroughbred nightmare. I wouldn't have exchanged one of them, they are all together in what I hope is horse heaven
 
I have one and she is a darling, quite sensitive, can be nervous, but i'm sure that's more down to her past and her breeding than her colour

As silly as judging a person by their haircolour!

One of the most evil tempered mares I have ever come across was a bay, and I have had a series of really genuine chestnut mares of various sizes.

No, I don't think it is any harder to sell a chestnut than any other colour, lots of people don't like chestnuts, but on the other hand, an equal amount do. Swings and roundabouts! I don't like bays (as a colour) but I seem to have three out in the paddock

I bought a 4yr old ex race horse chestnut mare hoping she would be lively and a bit nutty. Couldn't have been further from truth. She is quietest horse I have ever owned and way too slow and steady for me. I have just sold her to a friend who wanted something quiet and sensible. All horses are different and all can have any characteristics regardless of colour, age, breed etc . I have to say though when I advertised her for sale I didn't get any interest and when spoke to people they all said didn't want a chestnut tb mare as she must be crazy and i must be lying......
 
There is a chestnut mare at the yard and she is the most lovely, gentle creature ever.

I also knew a chestnut arab mare who was the same.
 
I have two chestnut mares.

One is the kindest horse I have ever come across, kids can crawl all over and under her and she just stands there smiling, loving the attention and cuddles - she is so laid back and easy in every respect.

The other is not really a people's person - absolutely fine with me but will pull faces at everyone else. I certainly wouldn't let any kids around her unsupervised. She is very laid back at the yard, hacking and hunting, but travelling and events she gets incredibly stressed.

She is a bit of a one man horse which I think is probably a more appropriate description for chestnut mares.

The very worst, most evil, viscious pony I have ever had (for a very short time!) was a chestnut gelding!

I do agree though that chestnut mares would be more difficult to sell because of the stigma attached to them (unfounded or otherwise

Personally I would never buy another grey (having had 5 on the trot) - costs too much in shampoo!!

I think you should ask the same question about Bay mares and you will get the same mixed views and horse is a horse no matter what colour.
