Evening.

How are you gals and boy coping with your IAD horses. and other respiratory horses.

My pony has asthma and its controlled, by inhaler when she needs it and haylage and dust free bedding. The only thing is she can have odd bouts of coughing.
Gelding has not been diagnosed with asthma but his late mum was. He is fine as long as haylage given , no further treatment.

ID mare different scenario.

Spring and Autumn her breathing goes wheezy, she gets lethargic and you can hear the breathing when riding and lunging.

  1. She wears nose net when hacking (need to get one for schooling)
  2. She is on Global herbs Airways + powder
  3. She is on Equine America Airways liquid 10 ml b4 riding on lunging.
  4. She has just started ventipulmin
  5. She is on Haylage (timothy)

I understand this is a reasonably common issue sadly. My young mare has Summer asthma - triggered the vet thinks, by pollen. From what I have learnt the key is to use inhaled or nebulised steroids to keep inflammation down; that may reduce the need for ventipulmin which will possibly stop working if used for an extended period. I am still experimenting with dosage and other complementary therapies but a friend of mine uses only steroids and not ventipulmin. People have success with a variety of things in addition. Things that have some research behind them include high grade boswellia as well as Vitamin C and DHA. Other things which might help include the use of garlic and eucalyptus BUT it is important to be cautious around those as whilst they can help they can also trigger allergic responses. For some horses they are really useful.

Re garlic: one vet I knew told me that using garlic negated the other meds/herbs/supplements you were using.

I have https://eramask.com/ for late mare gelding and pony. this mare is head shy and panics anything goes near her nose so cannot use it, or don't want to risk the damage to it if she flings it against the wall.

I also use Gold label Vapor mist
