A friends horse (25yrs) has just been diagnosed with IBS and this has probably been caused by Bute. (I have posted on this before when we were trying to find out about proteins etc). He drastically lost weight as he wasn't utilizing any protein. We now have all that in hand and his protein levels are fine and his medication is on the decrease and he is standing up to it very well. Now we just have to put weight on him which is my next question. We have tried soya meal which he thinks is disgusting and won't go near it. He loves conditioning cubes which we are shovelling into him. He also has a balancer and linseed oil (he is slightly fussy about the oil but left in his stable long enough he will eat it with his dinner). Years ago we used to boil up linseed and barley for our horses in the winter. I know this is considered old fashioned but can anyone suggest anything else? He is on 4 small meals a day with ad lib Readigrass.

Make sure his hind gut bacteria are healthy, after a lot of medication they can be severely affected, if so, feed isn't utilised effectively. Look at something like Protexin to address this.

I used alfa a oil, thunder brooks balancer (no soya or molasses as the horse had ulcers) and micronised linseed on a QH that had run up like a racehorse after colic. It made a huge difference to him - you can substitute the alfa with chaff or readigrass. I also think good hay is key.
