Moving yards this month. Eeek.

My mares never had a name plaque so looking at getting one personalised.

I was going to have her name, with my mobile number in small writing below. Just in case of emergency.

A friend has said that’s dodgy, incase anyone gets hold of my number I don’t want to. I just like the thought of my number being right there if something happens.

Any thoughts? Am I being OTT? It’s a DIY yard, owner on site but doesn’t go in those stables much. I’d say 35/40+ horses.

I personally wouldn't want my number that obvious. Exchange numbers with the other liveries or have a book of owners numbers in the tack room. They may already have something organised, also which vet practice you use.

I’d imagine any situation that requires a phone call would include YO anyway.

Better idea might be introducing self to your neighbours and giving them your number just incase (or see if theres a yard whatsapp/messenger group).

But I dont think its a particularly bad or weird idea and you should do what makes you feel most at ease.

When I was on DIY in the UK, the was a list on the whiteboard with every owner's mobile number, so freely visible to everyone who came into the stables. It was really helpful when a horse injured herself and her teen owner had a meltdown because we could contact her mother and get a vet organised. If any one you don't want to contact you starts calling too often, just block the number. To be honest, the whole world and his dog seem to have my mobile phone number, mainly an awful lot of delivery drivers.

Would it be possible to have a waterproof pouch type thing actually in the stable with ICE numbers in it? That way others on the yard can access the numbers if necessary, but not obvious to all and sundry.

My YO lives on site and is very hands on, so it's not necessary, but on some previous yards it would have been very practical.
Yep, I'd do it. The world and his dog seem to have access to my phone number already, so adding fellow liveries to that list might at least have a useful purpose.

I would say it would depend on the yard.

One livery yard I was at was a 70 box yard, also a riding school, also had 2 footpaths intersecting through the yard (so 4 public foot entrances as well as the driveway. I would not put my phone number on display there!

A yard I sometimes go to now for training/livery is much more private, phone controlled gate and no public access. I would feel comfortable with my number on display there.

If your yard doesn’t have a whatsapp Group of the like, perhaps the YO might be open to the idea of a board in the tack room (or other secured area), that owners can add their numbers to, should they wish. Failing that, as someone else has said, swop numbers with the owners of the stables either side of you, if they’re happy to do so. I’d always be happy if someone wanted to swop numbers and keep an eye on each other horses.

I've done this for years.

Mine has my number & my OH's. We've not received a dodgy phone call but a couple of very gratefully received calls alerting us to something over the years!

We had a whiteboard up on a tiny yard I was on. Middle of that first covid lockdown a group of people came across the footpath, did a detour to the barn and I found them in there petting horses and reading the noticeboard! It had never felt uncomfortable until then ..
