Just got a call from somebody at the yard telling us not to come to the yard as its sheet ice the whole way and there's no way we'll get there

so horses are in yet again. Mine was kicked yesterday and the vet was coming out to check today. If he managed to come out i'll have to talk via phone. He really should be out and walking it off but can't get across yard to turn out.

I wish I was close enough to walk now but to be honest as I can't even walk down the drive because of the ice i'd end up with a few broken bones!!

Bah humbug

who' else is suffering?

Me too , I went out to the car to drive over to the yard a car turned into my road and skidded down it. Then i decided not to go down, rang my YO and she said everyone is not coming down because the blck ice is so bad.

Mine has been in since sunday

I've managed to get him across to the school yesterday and monday so he can stretch his legs but we did slip a few times! Doing the daily jobs is also hell and takes me twice as long and my farrier is due out and I have no idea where he will be able to shoe him! I should be glad at least that I can still get to the yard though (touch wood!)

its awful, why can't they grit the roads? where abouts are you? i'm down South and you would think the world has come to an end because we can't cope at all lol

Yep me, ours are in the stable for another day. Luckly the horses are ok and dont mind, mine was very playful yesterday while I was grooming which is a good sign that hes happy being in

Havent been down for a week, luckily hes at his rehab livery place on full livery and they are going on the walker. Its weird not seeing him, and his ridden work was coming on fab :-( just hope we dont have to start again!

We are iced in, can't even leave the house... which has meant big problems seeing as we're on a private yard and not livery so no YO to do the horses for us

Am hoping to get down later on if the ice thaws out.

It's sheet ice where mine are too but I've left them all out (two were coming in at night previously) and YO (courtesy of Mr Big Red Massey-Ferguson) has put one of those massive haylage bales in the field. The water troughs are solid but they have a running stream in one corner so are OK for food and water for a while. If it's still no-go when the haylage runs out, he says he'll put out another bale for me. However, I have the vet coming tomorrow morning (assuming she can get there) to do the weanling's second vacc . . . . . we'll see . . . . the forecast is for slightly higher temperatures Saturday and Sunday but in the meantime we are expecting rain (which is what caused the ice problems in the first place)

yeah the roads round here are awful just ice everywhere, luckily i got to yard OK this am although sliding sometimes but if its really really bad I am lucky that I can walk to the yard if needed be..takes bout 45mins each way.

My mare is used to being in now so she's OK she loves having her haynet in am.

I am on part livery, and I got a text from YM this morning to say that all the horses in my horse's field are staying in today. There seems to be a micro-climate at the yard - rain at home, and thick snow and ice seven miles away at the yard.

I dread driving up there, and I go up every night. Nightmare.

luckily my friend was doing mine this morning. which is a good thing a i've spend the last hour watching cars slid past my house

Horse is iced in as there's a hill from the yard to the field, and I won't risk it. Driving is actually not as bad as it looks - sheet ice everywhere round here, with patches of black ice on the clear parts. Nothing has been gritted properly, if at all. Still managing to get there twice a day though, even if it is taking me twice as long each way.

Our horses are iced in, we haven't been able to get them out of their stables since Thursday, its like an ice rink outside. They are coping suprisingly well, I think we are worse worrying about them!

haha I agree with that. they won't die from being in for a few days but feel bad they can't go play.

Mine were in on Fri, out sat, in sun and mon, out yesterday and then in again today so they must be really confused. and then a total stranger looking after them today!

Despite being down country lanes, my lot seem to be ok. I've been out riding a couple of times because the lanes are just water, no ice. However the byway leading to the field is terrible, I can't get a car up there so I have to walk the last 5 minutes. They live out all year, so even if I really can't get there they can pretty much please themselves.

Our yard was just slightly slippy this morning until the rain came and is now unbelieveably slippy and is sheet ice.

Racehorses need to go out exercising but can't. Just glad I got Bog out yesterday and took him for a 9 mile round trip down main road which blew some of the cobwebs away.

Shouldn't think we'll hunt tomorrow!! Supposed to be going to get new shoes on horse as well tomorrow. Can't see that happening.

Think i'm gonna cry! Vet came out and gave my boy antibiotics, bute and bandaged leg up to eyes balls where he got kicked yesterday. YO will look after him but the fact he's hurt and I can't get out there is horrible, i'm the only one who ever touches him

I can get to the village and walk the mile or so to the yard and I'll have to because the horse is a real git and I'm in the bad books for putting him in the only field I could safely get him into after him being in for a week. He decided to get into another field becase he is so desparately lonely.
Horse is foul though and is only on hay, carrots and chaff, no arena so I can't even lunge.

It's been like this in Cambridge for the best part of a week now

We missed Olympia, and have abandoned plans to take my horse to the vet hospital today as it's just to risky

I walked the 4 miles to my yard yesterday morning and back, starting at 6 a.m. Actually enjoyed it! Today was less fun as very icy but got a lift in and back. I'm on a hill which is sheet ice and couldn't move the car though hoping to get it moving this afternoon. It's now raining, which might or might not help!

yeh i'm debating whether rain will help or not. seems to be above freezing and still like an ice rink out there but a little bit less of one! yay!

God, can't believe people have it so bad. I have to say where we are, even the country lanes (the ones used a fair bit though) have been gritted regularly and, even if covered early morning they are clear by sort of rush hour!

The only bad road really is the steep hill to our stables but having a 4x4 has def been a help! Haven't been able to ride out though as too risky really which was a shame as had 2 days off work and the intention was to ride. No doubt, as i am at work today the roads will thaw!!!

grrrrrrrrrrrrrr thats not fair. I have no idea why the roads round here haven't been gritted at all, its stupid. Even the main roads haven't been gritted

You guys could grit your yard/drive etc yourselves.

You can buy grit at DIY and Garden centres or if you can't get to one then cat litter will do the same job.

You may also find that steep roads that aren't major enough to be gritted by the council have grit bins for public use. Last year DH and I gritted our road so I could drive to work and this year a neighbour has done it.

I went to B&Q but they didn't have any. any idea where you can get it?

Problem is the yard is 15 mins drive and NONE of it is gritted.... so id need a lot of grit and would take a very long time
