Icelandic horses and fjords?

my friend has an Icy who is lovely tho she is quite stubborn and a bit nappy, she has certain routes she likes. Also she wont trot up hills, only walk, but she is 17....

She also has sweet itch so her lovely mane had to be hogged :-( have to watch for sweet itch with Icys esp the ones born in Iceland and imported, we have different midgies here so they seem quite prone to sweet itch

I do like them as a breed tho!

I OWN A FJORD AND SHE IS FANTASTIC!!!!

I'V ONLY HAD HER SINCE CHRISTMAS BUT SHE IS GREAT. SHE IS SO TRUSTWORTHY AND IS ALWAYS WISHING TO PLEASE. I WOULD RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE. THEY ARE A LOVELY BREED TO OWN AND ARE BERY EASY TO KEEP.

I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In Sweden there's this fjord that twice received the Best Horse for Handicapped of the year award. I've met him, and I would have put my grandmother on him every day in the week. He just have this "aura" of confidencegiver around him.

Near my summerhouse, someone has 3 fjords, I've met two of them out. One insist on walking on the wrong side of the road as long as there's no car in sight. And one is described as being completely lovely, and does everything you ask for as long as he feels for it.

from Sweden.

I worked with both breeds in Scandinavia, in my experience Fjords are fantastic. Very hardy, very laid back yet forward when you want them to be...every one I met had a lovely character, real personalities who love attention..sometimes stubborn, respond best to calm, quiet handling and riding...heavy handedness will only make them defiant.

I found Icelandics to be a little more fizzy and very independent.Very intelligent, good escapers! Amazing stamina and love to be busy.Youngsters can be very testing (can't they all).A great endurance/competiton horse, not as happy being a 'leisure' horse, as they need something to do.

Both lovely, unusual, interesting types, very easy to keep. They don't take kindly to being in a lot or over pampered, they are for those who like to keep their horses naturally imo.

My mum has a Fjord and he's just wonderful. I've never seen my mum so happy and confident. He's great as he looks after her and will go at her pace but where you get a more experienced rider on he fizzes up a bit. We've only has him since the beginning of the year but we've already done loads with him. Def a family allrounder. I really can't fault him - he's easy in every way.

I have an Icelandic - he is wonderful and is 5 -gaited, meaning he walks, trots, tolts, gallops and paces. All Icelandics tolt, but not all pace. Icelandics are generally not for the faint-hearted, they are great fun and have wonderful temperaments but are not normally novice rides. As has been said, most of the ones that are imported from Iceland develop sweetitch after a year or so of being here and they need to wear a Boett from March onwards to prevent rubbing on everything. My boy is 20 now and sadly has Cushings Disease, but he's still great.
