i have posted before about my cob he has alot of feather and hes constantly itching and stamping his feet. ive came down to the conclusion and been told to get the vet out for jabs. i want to have the right information about these things. the jabs haven't worked for a few horses and ive been told to put diatomaceous earth on to there feathers and that should also kill the pests as well. i want to have a few solutions about this and have all my information if anyone knows about this stuff can you please give me some information and how to use this stuff etc and what it does.. thank you all in advance. this is a big help. x

Sounds to me like he may have mites/lice hanging around in there. Deosect is fab for killing the nasty's although you have to re apply after 14 days as it doesn't kill the eggs. Treat him 2 or 3 times should be sufficient.
I believe you can use a fine water spray to apply it (diluted) but with feathers I would probably opt for a sponge...to get right down to the skin easier.
I'm afraid im not familiar with the other product you've been told to use??

Its a natural powder, you can't over dose with it and just apply freely. If your horse will stand quietly it may be an idea to put some in a tub trug, place the hoof in it and work the powder up the leg, much less waste that way

Although its natural its sensible (as with any powder) not to apply in a confined place as it may make you cough

You can get it cheaply on ebay, it varies in colour from white to a pinky colour

It works by breaking down the outer of the pest and drying it out, retreatment is advised every few days for two weeks (for chickens which is what I use it on) so you catch the pests that hatch later

Yes, if you use it wear a dust mask as it is very bad for the lungs if you breathe it in.
My first port of call would be the deosect jabs though I sorted mine out with a solution of permethrin rubbed into the feathers.

Deosect is applied to the skin? I don't think it comes in injection form?

Dectomax injections are meant to be fab for mites. Mites burrow into the skin so by applying something topically you really only reach whatever is on the surface. Dectomax kills them from within. It does need to be redone after 10 - 14 days to kill newly hatched mites :)

I'd get the dectomax injections done first and then keep on top of it by regularly using the Diatomaceous Earth. The injections are cheap enough too :)

I've seen people recommend frontline spray on here. A pipete (designed for an XL dog) is put onto each leg. It can be pretty expensive though. The active chemical is fipronel. You can shop around and find other brands that are cheaper but contain fipronel :)
