Icing legs at an event....

We used icetight, or other clay type were i worked, I use a blue gel from tigga saddlery as clay stains white legs. We also had cool boots at work that you put in a bucket of water and took ice in a cold box!!

I use a ice tight type leg clay. I have a trailer too so don't refrigerate it. After his wash down post xc I apply it to all 4 legs, newspaper on top of that then pads and travel bandages

Has anyone ever used Equine America Green Ice Gel

?

We use ice cube bags from supermarket, freeze them overnight then put them in a cool box with some of the ice block things and they stay frozen until you need them. They're perfect size for horse's legs and just bandage on.

We've also got some Puffa Heatbeaters to use after the ice but I think they're very hard to get hold of now. We don't use Icetight or similar as I don't want to cover any scratches etc the horse may have picked up.

I think i may give the Neo Ice Equine Bandages a go as they sound like the least hassle.

Can you put travel boots on over the top of them?

i use them (And really like them)It can work out costly with the recharge ect, i have travelled horse back from event with boots over the top but not sure if its a good thing to do as legs were pretty hot,, i think they make a set of travel boots to go over the neo-ice to allow air flow ect?!

No you must not cover them

hint to anyone buying these 'rechargeable bandages' get a plain cotton bandage rather than buying the 'special' one as they are one and the same, then use the charger on it.

Interesting I am just working on an article at the moment about how so called cooling clays have a negative effect on cooling tendons just need to get the vet who has done the research to give me permission to use it.

I use aerborn cooling boots they are fab - tough, easy to use and non messy. I stick the water bucket in the shade and stick them in after Sjing ready for xc. The longer you leave them in water the cooler they are.

i used neo ice and thought they were pretty useless, just my opinion, but wouldnt spend money on them again!
now i just use picnic ice flexible sheets that i bandage on, seems to work well. take them in a cool bag

my vet also does not think any type of cooling clay works to the extent that ice would, and told me to use ice, aerborn boots, or cold hose for 20mins plus when returning home

i know the areborn boots get lots of +ve press on here, they are quiet expensive for me a poor student thats why i stick to the picnic ice!

Be careful with gels as most are not FEI legal and if they are legal they tend not to be that good. I tend to use arnica type gels but mostly for overnight not to cool.

I got my cool boots off ebay for £20. I also did not have £60 to spend on them.

I use Like Ice but am in 2 minds about whether use of it is worthwhile. Local vet doesn't use anything on his horse as he says these products just mask possible injuries that show up later.

I know if I've got sore muscles it feels nice to slap this stuff on but not sure whether in the long term it would do me, or horsey any good!

Has there been any research on this sort of thing?

A word of warning - please, please, please be careful using any sort of leg gels, etc.

I'd used them on my horse a number of times before and he'd always been fine - but then used them after one event and he had an allergic reaction to it. His legs swelled and blistered, and the skin literally started to peel off. It was, quite honestly, one of the scariest and most horrendous things I'd ever seen. He ended up being off work for weeks and was obviously in a lot of pain.

Never touched the stuff since.......

I take crushed ice in a bag in a cooler box, and put it in bucket of water and slosh it over legs which I think gets the initial heat out. I then put on the neo-ice bandages on which I think are really good. I pop her in the lorry with them on (not with her travel boots on top), as I always reckon on being at an event at least an hour after finishing the xc (very, very rarely have to wait for prize giving!). I then take them off and put travel boots and feel that at least her legs have been given a good 'cool down' for an hour.

I'm really interested in your article lec - where and when can we read it please?!

I stopped using clay as I heard so much bad press about it actually heating the legs after the first hour or so. Now I use lots and lots of cold water and walk her, cold water again then gel (I've used the Ice Blue and as above you do have to watch out for them being comp legal) and bandage. I travel her home in bandages but no travel boots as they just heat her legs up too much.

A leading brand of cooling gel reacted with my horses's legs too. They swelled up and it looked as if he had pulled his tendons. He was at a 4 day show and we brought him home early as we were so worried. Turned out it was just the gel so a wasted journey home and loss of entries for nothing! Stupid thing was that his legs were never hot after work anyway but I just put it on him as I thought it would make him feel better!! Will keep my money in my pocket in future
