ID and saddle problems

Does anyone have this problem?
Shadow is an ID that just keeps growing although fingers crossed has finally stopped. He is so broad (ironing board springs to mind) that I have had a few problems with my saddle, the saddler has come down a few times and he seems to think it fits fine, but I find when i ride Shadow can throw his weight and my saddle will completely slip (even with girth done up tight). Simetimes it feels like I am riding a rolling barrel!!
Has anyone else experienced this?
Any ideas on how to stop it slipping?

He is quite balanced and it happens even when my instructor rides him as i thought it might have been me not being central in my riding.
 
I too have a rapidly growing ID so can sympathise!

Which make and model saddle are you using? It may be that you will have to do a bit of research into tree shapes in order to find a manufacturer that 'fits' your horse.

Ive settle on a Saddle Company saddle for mine and it does fit very well dispite him having little or no wither and, as you say, an ironing board back!! (very comfy as well!).

Added bonus is they are adjustable (by a qualified SC fitter) on site so if you need to have them altered you dont have to send them away for weeks on end.
 
I have a synthetic wintec GP XL cob. I brought it when just under 2 years ago as seemed most economical saddle while he was growing.

Shadow also has 0 wither!
 
I go with you on Saddle Company spaniel as you know Rontus has had so many saddles since we have had him and this is the best saddle he has ever had - so easy to get changed

IME the wintec saddles dont sit too well on a lot of horses. I think its the shape of the panels at the back, the angle seems wrong.

I can appreciate the cost factor though but it may be that a new/secondhand saddle from a diferent maker may be the answer.
 
It might be worth looking at a VSD cut saddle, these are a bit straighter in the shoulder than a regular GP. Ideal do a nice one as do many other saddle makers.
 
He should have fully grown now so am looking at investing in a new saddle for him so will take all info on board and start looking.

I bought my 3 yr old ID with a med-wide that was ok.

Invested in a wyntec wide which again was better.

Had the saddler out a year last christmas as I felt ready to invest in a proper fitting saddle.

He was by then...XXXXXX wide!!

Anyway, I ended up getting a m2m Albion SLK dressage saddle, customised with long flaps etc, and a Saddle company jump saddle.

The saddle co saddles are all made to order from a template of your horse.

I'm now ok, but the jump saddle did slip a little with my leather girth if he got a bit sweaty (the joys of no withers!)

I now have wintec girths and love them. They grip all the way across, evenly and neither of my saddles slip now

Sorry to tell you this but I have a 5yr ID x WB and he's almost 17hh - would imagine a full ID might get even bigger!?!
I'm having similar problems with my boy, have got saddle fitter coming out 2 Feb so I'll let you know what she says! Please don't forget to let me know if you get something sorted as I might be going down the same route!!!!!!

My new boy is 7/8 ID and just has a saddle fitted today. He is rising 4yo and wide fitting. Saddler was very good and have ended up with a farrington event saddle which is a med/wide. Saddler says it is a saddle for life as it is very adjustable. Can sympathise with the growing thing, my boy stands at 16hh at the moment supposed to make 16.2hh vet reckons he will be nearer 16.3/17hh!

Saddler also said the ideal saddles are a good fit for his type too.

I have an IDx and can sympathise, even when he lost weight at the start of winter he was still too broad for many saddles. I did have a Wintec GP on him as i felt i would be able to adjust it as he got older, however it was never a great fit and is now sold. I have been pointed in the direction of a Saddle Co Saddle too and hope to get one later in the year.

BobletLeCoblet on here has a cob Saddle Co saddle for sale second hand at the moment.
 
Wintec didn't fit my IDxTB either - he is quite barrell like!

In my experience, they only fit high withered horses.

Albion, or any of the German makes usually fit flat backed horses, as the German warmbloods have very similar shaped backs to ID's i.e. low or muscly withers and flat backs.
 
My ID wears an ideal GP saddle too, and her dressage is a something jessica i think which is lovely. My girl kept growing till about the age of 7 or 8 as well. She grew a good 4 inches after we bought her as a 3 year old.
 
My IDx has also proved diffcult to find a saddle to fit, she is wider than a standard XW and I am having an Ideal VSD Event made to measure for her at the moment. Although she does have withers and I don't find her "barrell like" or find saddles slip/move a lot.
 
I've got an ID. For a long time he was in an Ideal event saddle that was fitted with Flair (without the Flair he'd have grown out of it a lot sooner!) & that was a good shape tree on him. He's not a really wide horse though, certainly no table back & he has a definate if wide wither. He now has a WOW saddle that I'm really really impressed with, it just seems ironic that I got a fully adjustable saddle when he'd nearly finished growing

My ID x mare (who is definately barrel shaped) is ridden in an ideal international event saddle. it never slips and is unbelievably comfortable. has fitted her well since she was 5 - now rising 12. obviously with regular checks in between!
