I'd love a border collie - but should I?

NOT my daughter but this video of the young lass with her BC was recorded on a camera with slightly lower spec than my daughters so it gives an idea of what she could do to jazz up BCR's stuff on their YouTube channel.

Going to be blunt, probably not the dog for you.

If you want to get into agility there are many other breeds you can get to do it...you don't need a BC. I like them as dogs, would never actually have one myself, but i do think they need a lot more exercise and stimulation than just a normal dog. They are the epitome of a working dog, theyre bred to work.

Absolutely. They are like a weird mix of a child genius and professional athlete. Need to be mentally stimulated and challenged and have to really get their brain in gear but also need to run off a lot of steam. Lot of steam going spare too... I have never seen any of mine look too tired or as though they aren't in the mood to go out.

Could run them ragged and work for 8hrs straight but even if they're in a nice deep sleep, if I go "OK c'mon" they're up and out the door.

With great difficulty!!

How bizarre you had the same experience cos I had to badger and bother and nudge them as a gentle reminder quite a lot before they got sick of me and responded. Only thing I can suggest is emailing them again or dropping a message on Facebook cos their page is maintained and updated quite regularly.

My daughter has been offering to take video footage and photographs to update their website and add new case studies and whatnot. Has the full setup with two professional Nikon cameras, tripod, different lenses and brilliant video editing software. YouTube videos are out of date and could do with being edited and brightened up to give them a fresher, cleaner feel and make videos more appealing to younger audiences on social media. Offered her services free of charge and she's still having to chase them up :(

They are so flat out with dogs that need all their time and attention the admin stuff just takes a back seat but it is frustrating when you're offering them help and it goes unacknowledged although it is appreciated.

To be fair I haven't done as much in recent months purely because I took on a young BC that needed a lot of work and re-training but now he's rolling on the plan is to pick up where I left off. Might need more chasing and badgering and nudging though I'm not sure.

They get approx 200 calls a week or something daft like that which in itself generates a huge amount of admin they need to do from the York office but definitely chase them up and let them know you're there and can offer help with dogs up in Scotland.

There will be a fair few your way I'm sure. :)

Thanks! I was rather surprised to never even receive an acknowledgment when I thought the offers of help would have been much appreciated. As you say, no doubt they are absolutely snowed under with dogs. When I have less on with our own dogs and livestock, I will give them another shout.

When you say "work" do you mean on livestock? I definitely agree they are the epitome of a working dog and need plenty of activity and exercise as well as an understanding owner, but the OP did say she wished to compete in agility and enjoys long walks etc. I used to be of the opinion that working bred collies only really thrived in proper working homes, but having seen many happy collies with active owners who participate in other activities I have changed my mind. Don't get me wrong - some collies really do not do well in non working homes, but if the OP is happy to find either pet bred collies, or go to a reputable rescue who assess for working ability then I really do think she would be fine with a collie.

We have ten working sheepdogs and at the end of a day of working on our hill farm, I can say that they are definitely tired :) That is not to say they wouldn't leap up and go again if it was asked of them, but that is the working drive in the dog. Most working bred dogs I know have an off switch, as they are expected to rest and have down time when not working.

Yeah I didn't get a single acknowledgement or standard out of office reply for ages and when I did it was on Facebook. Just bug them again they aren't unappreciative they're just super maxed out :)

Ooh sorry I missed this one. Can I come back to you later on? I stink like a rotting turnip and need to get a shower and desperately want to sleep but I'll come back :)

Of course, no worries. Is it okay if I PM you about a couple of dogs in need?

Absolutely course you can. Speaking of stinking of rotting turnips and collies - my youngest just disappeared down the back and round the pens in the pouring rain and pitch black only to emerge covered from head to toe in the most rancid ***** I have ever witnessed in nearly 40ys of my existence :( I'm typing this whilst the kettle is boiling and he's staring at me through the back patio window with a sad look on his face but there is no way he's coming in and through the house to go for a shower.

Bucket and sponge time it is fella. 5am and I'm already tackling this before setting off to tackle to stables full of even more. Dirty sod :(

Very mega super quickly before I douse the dog re: having endless energy and never tiring out.

One is full-blown working sheepdog but not a full time worker she helps the farmers daily / does all sorts and is out with me pretty much all day. No matter what she's never too tired to get up and go do more work. If I skip out on doing stuff with her or she isn't needed at the farm she's murder. Constantly staring at me all “We going? C'mon let's be doin I wanna do... c'mon bitch I wanna go out” and will not let up unless you give her a job or take her for good long swim. When she sleeps she's flat out sprawled all over and really gets her rest but if I go “Right” she's up. That's what I meant by there's no tiring her.

Fleet on the other hand (non-worker we took on a few months ago) is totally different. He's more like a lazy lab. Loves being outside and going on long walks and is super busy and all over the place when we are but if we don't have a busy day or I'm feeling lazy he's good. Doesn't get fizzy or up on his toes if he's not taken on a good long walk and given things to do and will happily keep himself amused for hours throwing a tennis ball around for himself in the house. Picks it up – chucks it then chases it and has loads of fun like a simple kid.

Puddi looks at him in disgust and shame.
