ID sire - would I create a monster??!!

I'm looking at putting my mare in foal this year. She's a stockily built 16.2hh ID/TB. I personally would like to keep the stockiness (anything too fine and I think I might squish it...:rolleyes::D). Would ideally like something short coupled as Mills is quite long. Would like to keep to ID, I like Sandy's Light at Langaller

I particularly like Sandy's Light (added bonus is he's only about 20 minutes away!) but somebody (one of them thar 'yard experts') said that he could be too heavily boned.

Millie is 17 and has had a foal before, although not with me and about 5 years ago...

Any ideas/help...

If he is only 20 minutes away, jump in the car with loads of photo's of your mare and talk to the people at the stud. If they are straight people they will give you good advice about how their stallion will do with your mare.
 
Both stallions you are looking at are very nice. Both have Colman in their breeding, Colman can put nice straight movement in.

I have an interest in hunter showing so I used Archie. Crosstown Dancer is Archie's sire and has sired many good show horses including the current heavyweight champion, Dancing Lord, who, if you like big horses is a stunner, ( you would not want him stood on your foot !!).


I was most fortunate to get a straight moving correct foal out of a plain, but correct cob mare. I was thrilled.

Both stallions have plenty of substance and if your mare has substance you should get a good strong type. It depends on what you consider a monster to be I guess.

Either way you will have a foal with loads of ID in it - perfect in my view !

OH MY GOD I've just looked at Dancing Lord - I think I'm in love!!:D I think the YE's (Yard Experts that is..) thought it might be a large foal for Mills to cope with..:confused:
What is Archie's temperament like? Millie can show the TB in her and can be a bit fizzy at times so I'd like something that is a tad more laid back? Sandy's Light is supposed to be a real gent, I don't know what Archie is like though?

When I went to see him to collect the semen, he was like a rather large labrador. I am not sure how much I am allowed to say on this forum. I don't think we are allowed to 'promote' things.

Go to his website and there are plenty of video's of him competing and at home. There are also lots of pictures of his offspring. I will leave you to workout which one is mine. The testimonials are interesting reading too. You will not meet a nicer or more helpful lady than Mrs Jennings his owner.

My mare is due to Maurice Minor, the only son of Colman standing at stud. Maurice does indeed put good movement into his youngsters and I know Archie does too. I'm thrilled with my MM yearling out of an ISH mare; she's certainly not for sale at this time and she glides across the ground; can't wait to get her out next year.

As A Alice says, Archie is a puppy dog, has a wonderful temperament and his owner is a real character too, always does what she can do to help you; his youngsters do a lot of talking for him plus he's out and doing other jobs too; a real versatile boy.
 
I saw Sandys Light as a three/four year old when he lived at a stud in Dorset. I was wowed by his presence and canter- I am into show jumping and warmblood breeding- and thought what a fantastic creature.

Archie has a lovely temperament - but more important - he throws temperament (and movement!) My oldest foals by him are now 3 and coming up to backing: I also have 2 year olds, yearlings - and foals due by him this year so you might correctly infer that I am very impressed with his progeny! :D

Don't worry about your foal being TOO heavy. TB is fairly dominant in a mix - and my 3/4 IDs look more like 1/2 breds - although with plenty of good flat bone!
 
I'm not a draught person, but I met Archie at the Addington stallion show a couple of months ago and find him, well, perfect in every way. Plenty of correct, straight, forward going, uphill movement, and an absolute poppet in the stable, where I went to give him a cuddle, and he then very politely asked if I could scratch his inner thigh, as he couldnt reach!!!
Rita is really lovely too.
I guess your best bet is draw your shortlist, go and see them all in the flesh, then take your pick!
 
It definatly won't be a monster and if it's born healthy and straight you will have a horse that will be easy to sell if you ever need to go for it.

You won't regret it. If only I knew how to post pictures I would put some on of my Archie filly, she is a stunner, kind as a christian, sensible, highly intelligent and a pleasure to have around. Credit to Archie because the mare isn't too special in the looks department, but she does have a nice temperament and is very genuine.

Good luck, you are in the best of hands with Mrs Jennings and her fabulous stallion.
 
I met MM and Colman what must be a good 15 years ago now. Phenomenal movement and presence I've never forgotten. It’s a shame as I don’t think MM is promoted enough. Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think Embla has a website.

They don't. I met MM when he was a young horse. I did not see Colman, although I did buy a colt by Embla George out of a mare who was by Colman.

That colt went to 18hh and floated. Without his tack he was a bit of a battleship, but under tack he had the wow factor in spades.

The other horse the McMaster's stood was Statesman another good stamp of heavyweight hunter.
 
Having seen both stallions I have to say I much prefer Archie. SL is really chunky and with a similar mare you could end up with something that really could be quite stuffy. I haven't seen SL move but have seen his Grading pics and I thought he lacked length in his paces, Archie however I watched at the Stallion Showcase and thought how well he moved for a draught..!
Langaller have some other stallions so I would look at them instead if you aren't set on Achie, but he would be my choice..

I certainly agree Archie has a fantastic temprement met him for the first time at the stallion showcase and his lovely owner invited me in to give him a good scratch and tickle. He was very affectionate and gentlemanly, and he moves beautifully certainly enjoyed taking photos of him :)
