OOI what would you expect a 3/8ths ID 5/8ths TB to look like?

I know this is a little like asking how long is a piece of string - any sensible answers welcomed!

give or take an 1/8th like this

If its any help we stand a 3/4 TB 6/8ths TB 2 8ths I.D type and he produced Angrove rumbaba out of a very small sprinter mare.

IMO it is always very hard to tell what you will get with part bred horses, you do have a rough idea with a ID x TB on average but not always you will get a cross between the two, but there is always a chance that the blood will come through, so the offspring is lighter or it may favor the ID and be heavier.
When you start breeding part bred on part bred it is even more of a stab in the dark.
but this is just my opinion.

Agreed - and added to the lack of certainty associated with cross breeding, both TBs and IDs vary hugely in size, looks and amount of bone.

Roxanne - my mare looks just like your boy, I was thinking of putting her to an IDxTB stallion for something more tractable than something with moer blood as foal will be for me to keep, not for sale.

Do the "breeders" on here think i would be better off going with a full TB rather than crossing two part breds then?

If you put a pic of your mare on and explain in detail what you want to breed, for what purpose, what level of competition you are realistically aiming at, what sort of size/bulk you need, I am sure a lot of people will be able to make suggestions :)

Thanks Ginny, due to me "winning" 2 nominations at SSGB I can use any Louella Stallion, so either Primitive Star or Proposal, or Weston Justice.

My mare is by Java Tiger out of a half bred mare by Blue Laser.

I do very much like the look of PP however feel for what I want - low level BE horse, a PS foal would be something I am more likely to be able to produce myself! WJ would certainly lighten her up and have seen some terrific youngstock by him but am concerned, as this would be the mare's first foal, that it wouldn't be big enough for me.
I tend to like a larger/mw stamp.

Sounds like you're spoilt for choice. :) I think you're in a dilemma because you have to decide between some excellent stallions. Your mare has superb breeding for eventing and anything by any of the full TBs you mention is likely to interest an event rider.

I suppose the choice really boils down to using a full TB or using Primitive Star and breeding for a middleweight. You say you prefer a middleweight horse. How likely are you to be able to keep this foal? If the answer is very likely then breed for yourself and use PS. If the answer is not very likely then breed the most commercial foal you can and that will depend upon your mare's strengths. Does she look like a potential dam of an Advanced eventer? If she does then I'd go for a full TB. If she doesn't then breed for the biggest market which is riding club level which again brings you back to PS. It isn't that I doubt his ability to sire eventers, its just that he has the quietest temperament of all the stallions mentioned so if the foal isn't quite athletic enough or fast enough or ***** enough for eventing they are still likely to be easy enough for an amateur to ride and should easily find a new home.

My mare is by White Clover/Clover Hill out of Silver Side/Blue Laser.

She is actually 7/8th TB and stands 16.2hh but is throwing enormous foals even though both stallions have been smaller than her! Her first is 3 (in 4 weeks) and stands at 17hh and is heavier than her and her other boy is rising 1 and stands well over 15hh and again has bigger joints than his dam so going to be a BIG boy.

I am debating who to use this time as I would love to use an ID but he would have to be smaller than her given the size of foal she has

Hi Im owner of Weston Justice, just thought it would be worth saying that Jp(Weston Justice) has thrown upto 17.3hh with ID/TB and 15.2hh too but I have seen the same from both PP and PS so the size aspect can be a difficult one to gauge. We had the winner of the Sports Horse class at Derby County last year out of a ID/TBmare who was 16.00hh and he is 16.3hh as a 5yr. old, but her 1st foal by a 16.3hh WB only made 15.2hh. So size of the Stallion may not equate to the size you want, so I would go for type and temperment.

Can you use Primitive Academy? He's now at Louella and I think he'd go nicely on to your mare...... :)

yes - any of the Louella boys, I really like the look of Academy but without any current progeny he was bottom of my list of the 3.

It is more than likely I will keep foal, but never say never, so I want something sane and saleable!

I'm not looking to breed a badminton horse, just something to go novice BE on so if it came out slightly on the chunkier side would still cope.

I may have a very nice mare on loan I am considering for WJ, she's of unknown breeding but moves very well and is a multiple show championship winner so his proven breeding and very impressive record I think would be the best choice for her.

It is so hard to decide - Holly your boy is gorgeous, if I got anything like him I'd be over the moon - who is he by?
