Hi,

I'm looking at getting a new (secondhand) saddle, and have seen an Ideal Grandee online. Looks good, and a reasonable price. I've checked trace profiles and it should fit - will get it on trial to check. The ad says it's a VSD cut, but online info looks like it's more of a GP/slightly forward cut...

Is it likely to be ok on my middleweight Irish cob? He has a bit of wither, not completely flat backed, and I was looking at the Grandee as it has a flatter seat and square cantle, so should give a bit more space for the OH who has started having a little pootle around but really needs more seat space!

Thanks for reading!

I have one second hand for my wb..I would definitely agree that mine leans more towards the jumping style of a GP than a VSD, although it may depend what blocks you have. I do love mine and find it very comfy to ride in, the seat feels lovely and secure and is a bit deeper than some other saddles I tried.

ETA my horse has a decent height of wither and a narrowish back and is in a medium width saddle.

I had one for my warmblood. After a while I realised it didn't fit correctly. It had been fitted by a saddler but it was too narrow and the wrong tree shape for the mare. The saddle that she has now is a MTM Harry Dabbs half panel GP. It is great.

No view on horse fit, but I had one (still have one actually) and although it felt VERY comfortable, it actually seemed to tip me forward. Couple of other people tried it and didn't like it. Couple did and loved it. So....

I love mine, it has knee and thigh blocks and the square cantle. It's a medium wide and goes on both of my horses, a 15.1 seven year old and a 14.3 24 year old, both light weight cob types, they both have some wither. Just had saddle checks actually, and my saddler uses the same saddle on her horses, she said that although some would consider it to be an older style of saddle it's a great build and suits many types. It's the most comfortable saddle over ever owned, well jointly with my Ideal Jessica!

It's kind of a GPJ, has a wide seat and twist, has a wide pommel, a semi hoop tree, so it can drop in front if your horse has more of a V shaped wither, otherwise it sounds like it may fit. It's a tree that used to be in a saddle I fitted for another brand.
