After the death of our JR, we have finally been able to start talking about what to do next.
The worst thing in our household right now is the absance of a dog. When you wake up in the morning and she's not there, and when you go for a walk and she's not there to come with us..it's pretty horrible.
We have all gotton over the initial shock and dispair of loosing Daisy. We can now smile and laugh about our memories, and I only shed a tear once a day for her.

We have decided that we deffinately want another dog. It's just not the same without one. We realise that it wont be the same, we know the risks of maybe being dissapointed as Daisy really was the perfect dog.

We have decided that we can't get another jack russell- we would always be comparing it with Daisy, and it wouldn't be fair.

We would want a medium sized (bigger than a JRT, but not as big as a labrador), so the dog would be easier to keep in the garden, without escaping through teeny tiny holes.

We would like an energetic dog, but one that does like cuddling up on the sofa in the evenings.

We originally thought a Beagle, but they are pretty expensive from what we have seen. Mum would like a whippet x lurcher (or just a whippet). We did think about rehoming a greyhound, but they would be just too big- so we thought maybe an italian greyhound?

Open for ideas, what do you think would be the ideal dog? There are no children in the family so thats not a problem.

And no, we aren't planning on going to get a dog tomorrow or anything- we would want to wait for a few weeks before we started seriously looking, but we have all come to terms with the situation so have decided we can start doing a bit of research.

Cheers!

I don't think you can go wrong with a lurcher by what you're describing, they come in all shapes and sizes too - i'm biased though as i have two!!!

Some greyhound bitches aren't that much bigger than a whippet, infact they curl up really tiny, and they are one of the most abused and discarded dogs in the country so it would be nice to do something to help by rescuing one.

I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who (when I worked on a yard full time) would happily come out hacking with me (3/4 times a day for between 1 and 2 hours) and she was equally happy to spread herself across your knee (or tuck herself into your side at an odd angle) and sleep in the evenings. Can't sing enough praises for this breed! And they're beautiful dogs to look at

I agree with One of the Pack - Jura, the little greyhound bitch I have just lost, was smaller than many male whippets now. I agree the dogs can be HUGE with greyhounds, but the bitches often aren't.

I personally would never go for an Italian greyhound - bear in mind they are toy dogs not proper hounds - they are really small and delicate little beasties, and the idea of them around horses would be awful

Now someone will post to say they have an IG and they are the best of course, but I would def vote for a greyhound or whippet myself having had both

I totally understand you wanting a different breed to the one you lost who was your perfect dog. Our aging Whippet is also the perfect dog and could never be replaced with another Whippet so we got something completely different - a Boston Terrier - an absolute bundle of fun and mischief.

In your situation, I highly recommend a Whippet, they really are perfect dogs !

Lol..yep..they are very delicate little things indeed...I would go for a whippet x greyhound, or lurcher type, as suggested some greyhound bitches are not actually that big in comparison to the males.

What about a springer spaniel - their energy is boundless, they love going for a hack and they are one of the most affectionate and biddable dogs I have come across.

Another vote from me for a Springer. I've had lots of different breeds but a springer is one of the most energetic, fun, bideable, trainable dogs I've ever had!
I have 3 of them and can honestly say they are the most affectionate little things and the working types are hardy and athletic and so far (touch wood) haven't needed a vet for anything other than routine stuff.

Springer if you want a really energetic but lovable dog. Or a schnauzer. I love mine (she's a mini, but you can get a standard or giant one) and as Super_Kat said a CKCS, my sister has just bought one and she is adorable!

Another Cavalier here for me. Loves coming to the farm. Sits and cries at the front door to go with you as you are putting your wellies on. Easy to pick up if trouble. Not yappy, snappy or chase things. But a typical lap dog (which is what they are) won't sit down and follows me everywhere even the loo. But as soon as I sit down - fast asleep on a cushion!!!! And can sleep as long as me!!!!. But they aren't the most intelligent dog out there. But don't need trimming or clipping but they do shed hair but not much. Other than that a lurcher as others have said. Don't eat much. But can be prone to heart problems so if you do decide get a reputable breeder who has theirs checked.

And they're the biggest cuddlers/kissers known to man. But they are a fortune to buy in England, being that they're so rare in the UK.

If not whippets, I think that Wheaten Terriers are a nice mid-sized dog.

I would love an IG but the breeder near us refused to sell one to me coz our lifestyle wouldn't suit one.
