I will be moving back into my rented apartment soon, which is much bigger than the average flat, much like a 2 bedroom house in one. I am at work for 8 hours a day but because I work shifts there are times when I will be at work for just 3 days on certain weeks. I have had staffies, JR before so am experienced in the boisterus of dogs. I will be out down the yard, where dogs are free roaming for 3 hours a day where I would need to walk there and back, about 30 mins each way, with time, size of apartment and all the above, what would you think would be a suitable companion??

Mini schnauzer

Cute, little, don't cast, very friendly and love lots of exercise!

Or a rescue dog

Two dogs to keep each other company when you are at work

I would go for something like a JRT again, they are what all horsey people seem to have as well

I'm biased but would have to say a Border Terrier. I work very antisocial hours and mine comes everywhere with me, happily getting up in the middle of the night and coming into work. Great around horses and other dogs. Brilliant little dogs.

I recently gave the advice that if somebody was looking for a small dog, capable of doing f. ex. obedience, agility a Miniature Schnauzer would probably be my first suggestion.

I also said that "If you want something that doesn't need much room indoors but are almost like a big dog once you go out, both Finnish Lapphund and Norwegian Buhund could be worth a look, f. ex. if they get proper exercise most days, and then you get a cold and they get minimal exercise for a few days, if they have some good bones to gnaw on, even 7 months old puppies usually handles it without getting destructive or climbing the walls." I really think they are suitable for most owners, they like to work and exercise but it takes a lot before they go nuts out of boredom. Buhunds usually barks more easily than FL's, but they're usually not half as barky as people think if you only have one, they do tend to get worse together with a "soul-mate" AKA another Buhund though.

from Sweden.

Patterdales!! They're great fun dogs really very similar to Parson JRT's but in a solid colour. We have got 4 of them, and I am a complete convert! They have all got great temperaments but are all completely different characters!
They are great round the farm, especially for ratting!! One of our pups from our first litter is doing KC good citizen awards and agility and doing well at it, they are very active and very intelligent little beasties!!

Fortunately they aren't recognised by the KC yet which I am afraid I can only see as a good thing for the breed!!

We do have a litter on the way due next week PM me if you want more info! They will be from 'Bear' our chocolate smooth coat bitch by 'William' our black rough coat dog. So probably a mix of black and browns with a mix of coats too!

I would just like to agree with those who have suggested a miniature schnauzer! They truly are the most wonderful little dogs and are full of fun! My little man plays brilliantly with other dogs, is incredibly clever, but still has a real streak of independence! I would not have another breed now, and in the past I've had a GSD, a Mongrel and a Yorkshire terrier. None of them come close to my mini schnauzer, I am a complete and utter convert!

Not often mentioned, but have a look at a Tibetan Terrier.

Performs like a cat indoors (will steal your fav chair, sits by the fire, REALLY pleased to see you when you get in. We leave ours for 8 hrs 3 days per week

Outdoors will take as much walking as you want to give them, enjoys car travel, great with people & other animals. Just like to be around you. Dont steal food, moult or smell

Not much bigger than the mini Snauzers
