We have a footpath that runs past our house and between our stables and field. Recently, it has got busier and busier with people walking through from a local camp/caravan site. They often stop and have a gawp at my yard and I'd like a bit more privacy. Does anyone have any ideas on how to cover a metal 5-bar gate to give us more privacy? The gate is uphill and the footpath downhill so it wouldn't need to be much higher than the gate itself to have the desired effect. I use the gate daily for horse access so can't be anything heavyweight. I bought some bamboo matting but that didn't offer much coverage.

Anything that acts like a sail will make the gate more difficult to handle when it's windy. Lightweight weldmesh panels you can cable tie a light tarp to would work but might be damaged in high winds. Onduline corrugated sheets are fairly lightweight. Box profile or similar metal sheeting would be most robust and if the gate is well balanced and swings clear of the ground it shouldn't impede handling too much.

Feeling your pain! I'm eternally grateful not to have a bloomin' public ROW across my land.

What you need is something that is going to be non-see-through; but light, isn't it. As "Burnttoast" above has said, you don't want anything that makes the gate heavy or will take the wind, otherwise I'd suggest some lightweight metal panels if you could find any.

When I was looking for a solution for a field-shelter we were putting up a few years back, I had a look around various materials; and came across this stuff which is basically corrugated iron, with holes in it, if that makes sense. Tho' thinking about it, this might not help a lot with the "wind" issue, but it might just be do-able...... that's the only thing I can really suggest.

The other thing I've seen on people's boundaries (out riding!! - being nosey) is something that looks like greenery but which is artificial. Or do what I did on my chickens pen to give some shade and get some camaflage netting and put that over it. It should last you though a winter, by which time you might have thought of a better solution.

Probably not much help.

Thin plywood and cable ties? Or even a robust cardboard box would last a while.
I tried out some options this pm. Tried netting but too see through. I had lots of thin lapboard left over from another project, so tried fixing that vertically with cable ties to the gate. It might work but don't think it will last long. I'll keep thinking!

Assuming you want something that doesn't look too hideous, willow panels? Like these

Windbreak material? There was a type of this put over Yorkshire boarding to stop rain when farm buildings were converted into stables at a yard I was at, it was black and sort of a thick mesh to still allow some wind through. It would be light enough not to affect the gate but would block out a good proportion of vision

We’ve put privacy netting (from Amazon) on a couple of our road gates after next door opened a glamping site. We haven’t got any horses at present.

We have somewhere where I ride that has this on his gate. It's like fake leaves. Tied on with green cable tie, very nice. B&M sell it.

Thar's what i was thinking. We bought a sheet off ebay to cover the slatted side of a field shelter and its done a great job. The wind can still go through , although it does offer some protection so it shouldn t make it too hard to open or close. I think i paid about £35 and it had eyelets round the sides which I have put cable ties through to fix into place.

Galebreaker - have a look at their site, allows plenty of air through, so not as sail-like as solid tarp /plastic, but difficult to see through.
For animal housing to permit full ventilation, but stop most rain or snow

I'll have a look at greenery ideas. Thanks.

That looks good!

My husband clad a gate into our yard with something like this,
I think is bolted them on, and from our side they look smart and match the building cladding.
