Ideas for sending a lazy pony forwards

Not read all the replies, so sorry if I'm repeating - but have you ever hunted him? That will definately get his blood up! It turned my previous little 'No' mare in to a 'yes, yes, yes' one!!!

Or cross country schooling (with another horse so he has a bottom to follow/a horsey friend to help give him confidence)? That would get him galloping and might blow the cobwebs away so he feels that forward = fun!

Perhaps if I could be duck-taped to the saddle?! I am famous at my yard for falling off on the gallops....on a straight bit...at a canter...and for no apparent reason. I suppose it might teach me to cling on!

duct-taped! sorry that really winds me up - clearly I have issues :o

Perhaps pony is reluctant to move for fear of this incident repeating itself? :D

srsly, you'll get used to clinging on for dear life, if you can't go hunting, definitely recommend xc schooling with a forward going lead... :)

If the girl at the yard can't take him hunting perhaps you could find a professional who you could pay to take him. You never know he might behave himself and you'll get the courage to have a go yourself.

I used to get annoyed by that too...until I went to buy some and came home with this:

;)

We have attempted xc schooling...did you know that the jumps were trying to kill him?! They were! He promises! Not safe to go anywhere near them apparently. But we did have some good gallops :)

He does have a slight tendency to be really naughty if someone gets on him thinking they can ride - it would either go well or be a complete absolute disaster ;)

No because I'm a wimp! Am trying to persuade a girl at the yard to take him though...

You would be fine!! Now would be the best time too, before the season starts. Autumn Hunting is slower than normal Hunting, and lots of people come out just for a good ride and for something different to do. :)

he'll be fine the first time, it's the second you need to watch out for! I suggest you take him the first time and recruit yard jockey the second ;) :D

LOTS of transitions in a short space of time.
I know you've probably heard it before but it does work! Try 100 in 25 minutes or count down to ten and on zero aim to be walking from halt / trotting from walk/ halting from walk etc. then next time count down from nine, then eight etc.
Each time you get annoyed with him, remind yourself that your lucky he's not taking off with you around the arena like a bucking bronco!!

Hi. Can you move him from the ground? ie lunge him, will he go forwards at your will in walk, trot and canter from the ground. If not, then IMO you have no hope from the saddle. If he is obedient from the lunge and listening to your commands you have a starting point from the saddle. Get some lessons in lunging him if you can not do it yourself.

I had the same problem with my connemara. In dressage my instructor tells me to tap him on the bum he gets a bit annoyed and bucks but eventually he gets the idea. I wear spurs with my connie for xc and sj but if i take them off he still goes quite forward because he loves xc as the people who had him before me did a lot of hunting on him. If i'm competing we put molasses and a sprinkle of competetion mix in his feed and he's really forward. I think short, sharp taps behind the girth work best. :)
