I have a backed but not really in work three year old. He has a huge grass gut I can't seem to shift. He comes in 10am till 7pm on 2 slabs of hay in a small holed net and is then turned out on a 1 acre bare paddock with 2 other porkies. It's too dry and hard out there to lunge him and I don't have a school or horse walker so .of sure what else I could do. He weighs 426kg and is about 13.2 but is a leg at each corner type. Has no channel of fat and bum is not fatty so its just this gross grass gut. Any ideas?

Tried muzzle which ended in disaster- he just kept cutting his face getting it off and I also found when I tried holding it against the floor that the grass was too short to even poke past the rubber bottom. Gutted really as they used to work on my I.d. but this pony is obviously more determined

I thought about this bit would need concent of yard owner angst other livers. Is it proven to work? I would need to convince them I think so need some good examples of it working :)

45 mins a day out and about on the long reins, both of you would get fit!! gets him going forward, out and about alone, without adverse weight on his back or joints, and as going forward and straight improves steering and confidence. i would reduce his hay when stood in by at least half!! and no bucket food other than a balancer/vit/mins.

agree with long reining & keeping in ! My spines & shihatsu woman told me to lift horses tail & gently pull, hold for a few seconds & release. It tightens the tummy muscles to help eliminate the sag ! Repeat 10 times a day.
I really ought to remember to do this, as girly plops has piled on the kilos this summer despite my best efforts ! I'm swithering about a green guard grazing muzzle but Y.O's horse has rub sores on her schnozz. . .

He doesn't get any feed ever even In winter. I can't really long rein out every day as need OH to help as the roads have loads of tractors. He goes out about 2 times a week at the mo. Do you really think one slab of hay is enough for 8-9 hours? I was worried I wasn't giving enough as there isn't any when I go up.

stating the obvious here and youve probs already done it... but have you wormed him recently??? a large gut without the fat everywhere els can be a sign of being wormy.

I once read Charcoal can help reduce grassy gassy gut but can't remeber anymore. I have the same problem with my mare she has a huge barell but the excuse of having had a foal a year ago so I hope with work it will reduce. She isn't fat and is up to date wormed , fed brewers yeast etc etc just this baloon belly.

Anyone know anymore about the charcoal?
