I have to write an essay to argue FOR something :(. I was thinking to base it on something horsey as I'd be more interested and get into it more. I was wondering if anybody had any ideas!?

So far I have:
Abolish racing
Something to do with hunting (I don't quite know though - going to read the hunting forum!)
Barefoot instead of being shod
More bridleways to be opened

I know many different people have opinions on racing; I don't want to get into a heated debate about them. I may not believe in abolishing it myself.

Any idea's are appreciated :D

For:
-tighter laws on cruelty
-driver awareness of horses/ tighter penalties for accidents.
-banning live export
-don't know much about it myself but something to do with moor ponies, improving stock, branding, etc.
-importance of company & herd behavior

considering on the news today they brought up people being charged with animal cruelty has increased by a quarter over the past year u could do something along tighter legislation, regular home checks, random spot checks on dealers etc etc...when it comes to horses there's alot u can argue for!

I don't watch the news :o but thanks! I'm thinking about tighter penalties for accidents with horses & driver awareness because a man in a van thought it would be smart to nearly kill my mare & I :(

Given that cruelty is very current with the recent cases, you'd have plenty of sources to research from.

TBG's idea of better slaughter transportation is good also.

Or maybe an argument for/against restricted breeding to cap the number of horses in the UK/wherever you are? You could argue it would be extrememly hard to do, but could prevent the number of cases of unwanted/abandonned horses?

another thing that really winds me up (not as serious as other topics mentioned however) is the fact that horse riders have to pay ridiculous money for permits over a large majority of commons where cyclists, walkers and everything else inbetween get to use and enjoy for free! a common near me is £120 a year PER RIDER...outrageous.

OH MY! I didn't know that some commons you had to pay! I feel sorry for you! :(

How about arguing for more horse slaughter houses? You could bring in the transport, cruelty & overbreeding arguments to it as well.

You could do the argument for microchipping all puppies, this was in the news this last week I think. As all foals have had to be micrchipped for the past few years you could show a good comparison and argument for with this.

i avoid paying...or if i see the marshals checking permits i swiftly go the other direction!

Great, so you're happy to break the rules and therefore cause the price increase for everyone else

There is no legal obligation for landowners to allow horse riders on their land, and by acting in this manner I expect it will become even less likely for us to be allowed to use these rides - big well done to you

But hey, as long as you are able to carry on doing what ever you want, that's fine

Sorry for the hijack OP but rude ignorant people annoy me! Is there one subject you feel particularly strongly about, as it is easier to write well if you actually care! :)

and what is meant by i avoid paying is i dont ride these places...the 1 place i have ridden that requires a permit, mod land, i wish any1 the best of luck trying to get hold of the people that you have to buy the permit from. a friend chased for over 2 months for a permit she had applied for and that was after she had been put through every department to find out what number or person to call. in the end she still never received it. if they aren't vigilant about sorting 'the law' out, they cant expect riders just to suddenly stop and turn around on their bridleways.

what needs to be argued for is a clear, simple and easily accessible bridleway map of all areas, for private, public land etc and one central point for riding permits. also the fact that this land that required a permit didn't actually have ANY signs up saying u needed one was not very helpful:rolleyes:. i fully appreciate and respect landowners who allow riding access such as the farmers that allow us to ride through their fields at my current yard...they provide clear instructions of access!

OK so here's an idea: EVERY horse owner to have their horse either freezemarked or microchipped (or both); plus an annual compulsory inspection by a vet to make sure welfare standards are being maintained and the RSPCA informed of the testing; as well as (compulsory, naturally) BHS qualification & membership for anyone keeping their own horse anywhere other than at a BHS approved yard - to include Riding & Road Safety which would be compulsory for obtaining public liability insurance.

Also............. any horse/rider combination ridden on the public highway MUST wear hi-viz.

Plenty of material here methinks????? Sorry am being a bit tongue in cheek, BUT think there's a lot of suggestions already and OP would do well to pick on something that is close to her own heart plus has a lot of easily-available material.

Personally I'd go for the bridleways/making off-road riding more accessible. You'd have lots of road accident statistics available to back up your case plus might just do some good too??? :)

I'll put my two pennies worth in if ok? :)
Being a part owner of several racehorses, my big beef is the overuse of whips. They have regulated it in Oz whereby every jockey must now carry a padded whip and can only use is a maximum number of times over any given distance. Regardless, I'm still annoyed/saddened/angry re jockeys practically belting their obviously very tired horses up the straight. I'd like to see some whip free races introduced on each race day.
There would certainly be lots of pros and cons to that debate and plenty of reference material available.

Thanks everyone!

I've gone for abolishing grand national even though I dont believe in stopping it, just changing a couple of things. It's easier and I could write a lot more for it in my opinion (mostly utter poop), but my English teacher won't know right from wrong so it won't matter :)

However, your teacher will know about proper use of punctuation (one hopes). It's "Ideas" not "Idea's". ;) I expect it was just a slip - your English looks pretty good.

Thanks everyone!

Mmmm, may I encourage you OP to write about something which you DO believe in - passionately??? Your writing will carry far more conviction and be much more impactive if you do .........

Just a thought. There MUST be something "horsey" which really winds you up and/or you feel strongly about???
