I need ideas on how to feed Prednisolone, my cob has had stomach ulcers on and off for several years, he is now on a maintenance dose of gastroguard daily to keep these under control.

Unfortunately recently he has gone off his food, dropped a weight, dull coat and colic symptoms.

He went to the vets on Monday and an ultrasound showed problems with his small intestines so biopsy's were taken.

Have have the results back today and they show severe inflammation of the hindgut, diagnosed with IBS and put on a course of 100 5mg Prednisolone tablets a day for 2 months then will re ultrasound.

Now I need brilliant ideas on how to get him to take said tablets as he is very uncoblike and fussy with his foods. At the moment all he will eat are maintenance cubes, carrots, just grass and wet hay. If he doesn't want anything just tips his bowls over and trashed it through bedding!!!!

Millionaire bites on offer.

can you stick the tab under his tongue, it would be difficult for him to get it out and spit it, or crush it and mix with a bit of syrup just a teaspoon or honey which is also good for the stomach esp ulcers and let him lick that off your hand.

Hi my pony is on these, 90 a day I had to put mint in he's feed & eats them fine.
Now on 20 everyother day and eats them fine without. Good luck x

If I have to give mine any meds I use good old marmite, disolved in warm water and used to dampen the feed, it works every time with mine, if I'm not feeding hard feed, I just make toast spread with marmite and put the meds in that, mine love it, I just have to remember not to nibble on it on route to the field

I have recently had to feed 30 tabs a day, only way to get them down was to crush in a plastic bag, tip into jug & mix with a little honey & warm water & then syringe in, I wouldnt fancy doing that for 2 months tho, 2 weeks was bad enough !

I had a horse who had to get 200 of these tablets for months. Thankfully he would eat them in his feed without having to do anything to them. Altho I have looked after a horse and we crushed them up with a pestle and mortar. but for other kinds of meds horses wont take have tried marmite with good results and also make feed up with apple juice. You could also try adding mint to his feed. Otherwise you could dissolve in a little water and syringe them into his mouth.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Tried today with it in his feed, I do already add mint as otherwise he won't touch it. Think he ate everything but the tablets!!! Cheeky cow.

Then made him a honey and steroid sandwich, turned his nose up and looked at me as if to say "do you think I'm stupid, not going to touch that"

Looks like a syringe is my only option at this moment. Oh well 100 tablets down only 5900 to go!!! What a depressing thought.

Have spoken to the vet about a higher dose so that he can have less but they are apparently five times the
price and none of this is covered by his insurance so trying to keep costs down.

Please keep suggestions coming.

Hi Bens Mum - Darcy was on these for ages, i mashed them up with apple and she gobbled them down, also tried water on feed with extra strong mints melted in it and that worked too

fingers crossed he gets better soon, its the counting thats the worst bit isn't it :) xx
