Anyone any idea on how to get rid of this mud that's matted and horrible. Picture below

He came like this when i bought him as he'd been in a barn all winter.

He's malting allot and I've been rubbing baby oil only it and trying to massage them out. Any other ideas?? He's never been bathed in his life (as you can see) a lot has fallen out since this photo was taken.

Please don't suggest clipping him :)

Thanks allot :)

I am not sure if it will work or not but get a packet of the round stainless steel pot scourers. Unravel them and plait three or four together and try that. Best thing for removing mud.

The other thing is to wet it thoroughly and then let it dry then try the scourer.

Good luck!

Shedding blade? A mate got two from a pen who looked similar and just brushed at every opportunity and put on Vaseline and vegetable oil to soften it. Took weeks! I'm afraid she did resort to clippers eventually (it'll grow back!!)

Agree that a shedding blade may work. I discovered them a couple of weeks ago and they're a god's send :D
Alternatively, soak with warm water and sponge, rubber curry comb to get most of it off, leave to dry out properly over night then should brush off easier the next day. But definitely worth giving a shedding blade a go

How about citting with scissors as long as its not close to the skin?I know when my gelding comes in plastered in mud I get the shedding blade out(but its no where near this),ive also learnt recently that kids scissors are brilliant for cutting mud out of feathers,i pulled the blades apart slighltly so they dont touch and it works as doesnt cut the hair and just breaks the mud up to make it easier to get out.

I'll try the shedding blade then :) hopefully some will have loosened with the baby oil. He's malting really badly sooooo hopefully won't be long untill it comes off naturally as don't really want to use clippers. Thanks guys :)

I wouldn't try and remove that. I have had a horse come like that.

It looks as if the horse has not yet shed the winter coat. Just keep brushing the coat away bit by bit daily and it will come off with the old coat.

If never been bathed, you could try and get him used to it... using warm water in a bucket but it may not all come out and pulling and tugging at it will only make it uncomfortable for the horse.

Yeah I don't want to hurt him do I, of I just try and soften it with some warm water perhaps aswell? I'm going to go up this morning and see if the baby oil that I splattered all over him has untangled a few? Thanks for the replies :)
