I'm sick of hay getting trampled into the ground.

My boys are kept in a field behind a council estate and metal items tend to go missing. We have to keep things cheap and cheerful in this neck of the woods!

I lay my hay out in a line about 12ft long along the fence line, they never trample it and my cob always has enough room to steer clear of my TB who is a bossy boots at hay time i also make sure that they eat every scrap before leaving more out, if there is alot trampled/left over its my indication that there having too much so i cut them down to save waste

Like Cob & Onion I put hay out in lines in some of the paddocks- well, I just unroll a round bale in the paddock.
Slightly more work but who cares, I reckon I was loosing 1-2 bales per round from feeding complete bales, this way I have almost zero wastage and much happier horses as they aren't fighting over piles or round bales and I move the bales around so the ground doesn't get poached.

As said before, big tractor tyres! Work a treat. I have two, position them far enough away from each other that the horses can eat without being kicked/bullied. The only downside is after all the hay is gone, the shetland climbs inside to finish the scraps. Very unlikely to injure a horse though!

The tractor tyre sounds like a good idea. You can roll it around to minimise the mud.
All I do is put whole (small) bales in the field in a slightly different place each time; so the ground doesn't get worn out. I would definitely not put any wooden thing in the field with nails or screws in it; it's bound to come apart one day. See the pedal bone infection post then you'll know why.
