ideas on keeping tack room organised? pictures welcome!

For feed as it's all in the same place, we have a defined space that is clearly marked. We have little 'cubes' made of one pallet on the floor against the wall, with pallet walls in between each one. This helps to stop people spill out of their space as they can't pinch a couple of inches of their neighbours' section. Easy and cheap to do as well. This doesn't include space for hay though as that's included in livery price.

For tack storage it varies as it's in three different buildings depending on where our stables are. I'm lucky as there are only two of us (me and my share horse's owner and we share everything anyway as horses are same size) in our little shed. It's a tip most of the time, which is normally my fault.

Ours is a shambles...... Finally found my stirrups ( pony been off) a pair of leathers but rugs everywhere. Got to do a chuck back in a mo..... Fly rugs currently being washed.... I will need them

I have two tackrooms, one is vaguely organised the other one looks as if a tornado has gone through it! My excuse is that I have to share it with a husband, a dozen cats and occasionally ducks if the sods get in there.

The vaguely organised one has shelving on the back wall, racks down both sides and space for storage boxes underneath the saddles. More shelving on the door side too.

Mine is a constant work in progress. I have two big shelves of saddle clothes, they are in piles, every day poly pads, every day saddle clothes and on top is half pads, hunting numnahs, show clothes and whites. Every livery has a peg for saddle and bridle. They have another storage area for rugs, I can't stand it all in the same place making a mess. There is also a large box full of boots. The more racks the better I find, I'm still in need of more and the bigger the tack room the better!

Really useful boxes - I just bought two of the ones shown in the world's neatest rug room  through Viking direct - 2 for £10.00 which is a bargain.

Bought them through my company for file storage, cough cough - the files are going in the cardboard box they came in - the boxes up to the yard :)

Livery yard I was at a long time ago build wooden partitions into the tack room so each livery had their own cubby. It wasn't super neat as that depends entirely on the livery  but it was organised and each livery could have the storage they needed rather than fitting everything onto one hook.

oh my good god! i am loving beccas rug organisation! now would i be an interfering YO if i organised liveries rugs with this method??! or would it be appreciated?

so i have 2 rooms- was going to have 1 for me and 1 for liveries. but now ive seen that 'rug room' do i have a rug room and a tack room and share? confused now!!! :D

All my rugs are in big zip up laundry bags inside one of those garden centre storage boxes. But I did just find very large clear zip up bags for under bed storage in Ikea for a few pounds each :) Perfect for 2/3 rugs each

Everything I own is usually in a storage bag, I hate dust and grime............and spiders!

my name is Kate and i have a plastic box obsession :D

I have just sorted through all the pony stuff and it is now neatly stored and stacked in plastic boxes, all like for likes, bandages in one, saddle cloths in another etc etc, I dont have a tack room but they are all stacked in the utility room at the moment,
anyone who wants me to come and organise / clean / sort their tack room just shout as I love it!!

At the yard I livery at they've split Tack and Stuff into two locations.

Tack lives in the (locked, barred, alarmed) tack room.

Stuff (grooming kits, hats, first aid, spare stuff etc.) lives in livery's own green and white garden storage units (like this http://www.gardenbuildingsdirect.co...Garden-Storage-Box-Seat-340-Litre-Green-Beige) that sit outside their stable in the barn.

It means the tack room spends more time securely locked and our stuff is really handy :)

At out yard every livery has their own tack room at the back of their stables. Will see if i can find a photo of mine. It isnt the tidiest though.....

Hmm, all my attempts with small plastic boxes resulted in them getting smashed - perhaps I am not the right kinda girl for them ?

So I have a HUGE steel wall-bolted tack locker, two of those rug rails (£7 jobs) outside my stable, and a garden green bench thingy for unused rugs. Of course, someone sat on it, and it's now stuck together with duct tape, but there you go.......... and all my lotions and potions live in a - wait for it - FILING CABINET !!! Could not survive without filing things every day - hoof boots, dustpan and brush, all my potions, grooming kit, radio, diet coke, pig oil , you name it, it's filed. ;)

And yes, I am morbidly tidy too. Sorry.

DEFINATELY keep your own things seperate.

I used to be hyper organised, not quite to Becca's levels, but every rug was stored in plastic, labelled for size and tog etc, and on shelves. Same for tack etc. However we were broken into, and it still bugs me to this day that I had everything clean and labelled for the thieves to sell on. Nowadays, I have them stored in various places, only labelled with the horse's name and 1 for summer rug, 2 for mid weight, 3 for heavy!

The best tackrooms at livery yards that I have ever seen were accessed via a door in the back of the stables, with a 3'x12' store for each livery. The next best one was an old cow shippon, so each livery had their own cow stall for their stuff.

We have a big bonfire at our yard, and one year someone brought an old kitchen that they were throwing away. We used a lot of that for the tackroom/feedroom!

Personally I gave all our DIYs a lockable tack locker, two rug rails in the tack room, a shelf, and space for 2/3 dustbins for feed. They also had a rug rail in the stable.

What a brilliant thread! Given me some great ideas for if I eventually sell our place this year and manage to move!

Love the V Useful Boxes and racking!

This is what I was going to suggest as I went to a friends yard that had this set up and it worked really well. Each space was about the size of a toilet cubicle (not a nice comparision but it's what came to mind :) ) They had 2/3 shelves across the the top for rugs/numnahs etc. a saddle rack and bridle hook and then they they grooming trunks boots etc underneath. Each Cubby had it's own lockable door which meant when they were shut it looked very tidy and would also help with yard security.

OP, if you can, I would have 1 tack room for your stuff and a separate tack room for liveries. Honestly. You won't believe what they 'borrow' until it happens. e.g. Clippers (livery asked if she could use my mini clippers just to hog horse. I agreed. I went out for a hack and on returning found she'd 3/4 clipped her horse with them! Of course no offer to pay for blades to be sharpened, just surprise that I wasn't very pleased!)
I'd have 2 saddle racks per livery (the double pole ones are brilliant, one for saddle 1 for saddlepad, or for 2 saddles) and either a wardrobe or big locker each, or a big wheelie bin, they are vermin-proof and hold loads! I got mine from the council direct, about £15 each, the dirty and rejected ones, a bit of work with bleach and a hose and they are fantastic.
I am in awe of the plastic boxes in the rug room. As long as it's lovely and dry in there and they won't go mouldy!

Try something like this:

If I had my own yard I would. I would also do the cube style thing for feed etc.

My yards like this - we're all give a wooden tack cupboard with one saddle rack and one bridle rack, if you have more than one horse you tend to get two cupboards.

My yard before we had to provide our own. Can buy them at big DIY stores, like plastic garden cupboard type things and the yard provided a saddle rack but some livery's bought boxes sturdier enough for a saddlerack to be fitted into the cupboard :)

My yard has a huge tack room where there is one saddle rack and a bridle rack per stable (with numbers; although I have taken a spare one as well :p ) and then there is a room further down the yard where there are wooden lockers ( the ones like **Vanner** said) where you can keep whatever you want in there & it works very well :)

some fantastic ideas! :)

going to have my own tackroom and split it into 2, 1 half for rugs and the other for tack and do a similar thing with the liveries tack room.

just shown the pics to my hubby who has just announced 'i can get loads of that racking for you from our old warehouse at work' :D so going to kit out a couple of walls in each with it and get loads of boxes (thought different colour for each livery?) for bits and bobs etc and then put the double saddle racks up along the other wall.

I'm having my yard built in the next 6 weeks and this thread has made me very excited. I've been planning where I want everything and now I think I'm going to have to invest in a huge number of plastic boxes. I only have 3 horses but am having a 12'x14' fully insulated tackroom and a 14'x18' covered washbay/grooming area as well as an 18'x18' storage barn. I've been keeping everything in half the garage for the last year so I cannot wait until I have space for everything to be laid out properly. Off to eBay to search for plastic boxes ;0)
