I've realised that I have to set some new goals for me and my boy. I've been riding all my life but have had a couple of long gaps. Been back in the saddle regularly for the last 2yrs but was too afraid to try anything new in case I fell off!! But last August I fell off - can't tell you what happened coz can't remember but ended up in hospital with a bleed on the brain. Since then we've gone from strength to strength as a team. We're now jumping 2'6" and I'm not fussed about getting any higher. We've jumped parallels, an oxer and mainly cross bars. Our flat work is very good but we have issues about cantering on the wrong leg at the mo and I'm working on it, I think that the fact I have lost nearly 4st has changed the way things feel and I hadn't realised that I was cantering on the wrong leg when I was carrying the extra weight. So anyway, I just want some new goals. We are working with my instructor towards a shoulder-in and I want to improve my leg yield. I also want to learn to do flying changes but need to learn this. This is the furthest I've ever brought on a horse. So does anyone have anything else to throw in the suggestion box??????

have you thought of trying Le Trec ?
If you can jump and do dressage as you say and just like riding and can read a map you could be very good at that without having to specialise in any particular sphere of competition like pure dressage

Is this competition wise or just for yourself and schooling learning?

There's a lot of other dressage moves you could learn, or there's branching out into things like le trec. I personally take my hat off to anyone who can get there horse to stand in a 10 meter circle untied whilst you stand outside the circle.

Chloe got 10 out of 10 for that

She would have stood there for 10 minutes or longer if she'd had her way. It's the one thing she excels at

We can do this. When I untack after riding he had 25 acres he could run off in but he stands by the car grazing until I've untacked including me walking way unlocking the car and putting my tack back in then he walks back into our "fiddling with my boy paddock" until he goes into his restricted grazing paddock when he follows me up the field and if I run he trots - often without the lead rope. I just love this horse he's amazing! We have no transport and no money for competing so everything we do is just to show off at home (99% of the time its just the two of us so its all for FUN!)

No not for competing - all for fun - something to do etc - we don't have any transport or money for competing! We have a field, a stream, our jumps are crates and fence rails and our menage is a bit of grass with cones and letters!! Just feeling a bit stale and need something new to try...

OK, if you can't compete how about getting hold of some dressage tests and doing them at home? That would make you think that you were doing something, and would be good practice.

you could also look at the trec movements and try some of those - like how fast can you walk a certain distance and how slowly you can canter that same distance

practice some mounted games stuff - bending races and bucket elimination jumping - all promotes suppleness and obedience - lot more skillful than people think

even if you're on your own you can work against a stop watch and time yourself to see if you're getting faster

Thanks Isabelle, you've just backed up an idea that I've been having over the last couple of weeks, I thought it would be good for the young girl who has my other pony on loan as well. Do you have to pay for the dressage tests or can you download them from a website somewhere free of charge?

Thanks, this is something else I've been thinking about but the obsticlse like the foot bridge and going under low branches etc are done most days out hacking. Once the field is cut for hay I can set up the corridor and the weaving poles. My boy's very good at counter canter so I wonder how long it will take us to be able to canter through??!! Are all the measurements on the BHS Trec website?
