My mare got an abscess on her withers. It's been treated by the vet and she now has a hairless/moist area. She's an old lady and I'm concerned that her rug will rub the area, causing it to leak and stick to it. She's currently got the rug sat behind it, but this will rub her sholders if kept on for any length of time. I'm just debating whether to get her old stable and t/o rugs out and to cut a hole out of them-would this work do you think?

Cutting a hole should do the trick I recon. Hope it heals up soon.

Thanks. I think I'm going to go for the snip idea-I'll just have to be careful that it doesn't leave any edges that may make her sore-she's a delicate old dear! It just seemed to be a small hairless area, then flared up...the vet 'emptied' it and it was gross! We've no idea what caused it. She's not able to be unrugged yet but this needs the air to it, catch 22 really.

Thanks for the advice

Friend of mine a few years back had a veteran Arab gelding that suffered really bad rubs on his withers by the end of winter and he did exactly what you suggest! He cut a hole so there was no pressure over his withers. I think he stitched sheepsking round the edges too. Worked a treat. Good luck x

Oooh I hadn't thought about sheepskin-what a good idea, thanks for that. My main concern was the pressure around the wither from the edges of the hole-these oldies don't half go some funny shapes!

Hi, i have an oldish lady who suffers with the wither problem! About 2 years ago i had enough and came up with an idea..... very think sponge like the thickness of a caravan seat cut into 2 thick long strips....then i covered them in a really soft towel...... I then attached them to the inside of the rug either side of the wither to lift the rug up off the wither, all this using plaiting thread. It works, it has been on her for two winters, and also been washed and proofed x 2 and still works! i would def. do this before cutting a rug. Oh, my rug i have done this on is a combo.
