I, Hovis_and_sidsMum, am a serial leaner when i ride.

I thought I was on the road to recovery and was at last sitting up straight and not wrapping my self around hovis' neck every two minutes

But alas I have suffered a relapse.
Since I came off Hovis a few weeks ago I seem to have gone backwards again.
The problem is I really don't realise I'm doing it and I think i'm sitting back and upright when in fact i'm leaning forwards all the time.
Its definitely a nerves thing but I'm not aware of it. I don't blame hovis for my fall, it wasn't his fault but its almost as if subconciously my body is "defending" itself by curling up which is of course making a fall even more likely!

Short of having someone screaming "SIT UP!!!" at me constantly what can I do to stop leaning forwards?

Lots of trot without stirrups on a forward going horse so you have to sit back to slow with your seat

Also, walking tall will help...

And dance lessons, too!

Oh God HASM, sounds like me with knobs on! I too am a serial foetal position rider! Even though I know that if you actually WANT to upset a horse or make it go faster, the best way is to scrunch up on its neck and grip tight with your legs! A friend gave me a coaching sesh a couple of days ago and as an experiment, I halted ned and sat taller and straighter until friend said I was actually 90 degrees to the ground . It felt as if I was leaning so far back I was about to fall off backwards! All I could recommend is some good lunge lessons. Failing that, you could shove a broomstick down the back of your top and jods when you ride lol!!! Good luck and if you find a good tip, PLEASE let me know!!!!

I used to have this problem, its human nature to want to curl into a ball when we feel nervous.

I taught myself to breathe and kept reminding myself to sit up right. I kept saying to myself to sit up proud, I am on a magnificent animal and I should sit up to do him justice. I also imagined I had a wire from my hat to the ceiling keeping me straight.

It will take a while, but it will happen.

Maybe some lunge lessons will help as you can concentrate on you and not have to worry about what the horse is doing.

'Leaning on your hands' as it is called will also affect the way you breathe, so concentrate on breathing as you are probably holding your breath too (I was) and the rest will flow into place.

Hope it all works out for you.

Stick your boobs out! As my instructor keeps telling me....quite embarrasing really as he's a man! lol

Funny though, coz when you do stick your boobs out, it makes your shoulders go back and does automatically make you sit up straight.

Also, I try to imagine I have a beam of light shining out of my belly button and I have to direct it over the top of the horses head between his ears, and not point the 'beam' at the mid point of his neck. (if that makes sense!)

Ooh! I am in this club! It is so annoying!

I like your 'beam' idea MHF... I'll try that tonight! I will think that if I beam at his neck, his head will fall off. Though, after him having been naughty on Sat - that might not be such a bad idea... at least he won't spook at clods of mud!

I am one too!
Have someone video you, you can then see how much of an improvement you NEED to make rather than someone constantly telling you. I paid for months in lessons to be told sit up etc but I didnt know where "up" was. However visually on a video i could see just how far i needed to change my position.
Edited to say i am still crap and nervous and make my horse go too fast for what i want!!!!
