Could the netted hay go in something other than a hay bell, something that offers no chance for her feet to come into contact with the net?
Pretty sure livery yard owner would say no as I was the one who suggest they pay €500 for the hay bell.Could the netted hay go in something other than a hay bell, something that offers no chance for her feet to come into contact with the net?
Ill have to put boots on over my ladies shoes Id say. Or ill come out some morning and she will be upside downMy mare always holds nets down with her feet, it's not pawing so much as "tool use." She's full time in Cavallo's and pads at the moment and has been for a few months, and they never catch in the nets (small hole). I always have them hung low or tied inside a tractor tyre - never had an issue.
Its a livery yard, 4 horses per hardstanding pen with Hay bell and hay net inside.Apologies if someone else has suggested already - how about haynet alternatives?
I.E hay bar, hay bags or the plastic slow feeders?
Ah I see - no suggestions unfortunately other than pawing at food can be a sign of ulcers! Its a livery yard, 4 horses per hardstanding pen with Hay bell and hay net inside.
Livery yard owner has put a lot of money into this and it works for every other horse as was for mine until she has started this pawing.
She is a bloody ulcer....hahahaAh I see - no suggestions unfortunately other than pawing at food can be a sign of ulcers!
I was thinking that but their so expensive.
Was thinking the WoofWear Medical boots?
They are neoprene so would be breathable.
Obviously Ill be taking them off daily to ride etc.
Thats what I am doing every day at the moment.. Ill have to get shares in duct tape...its a long winter LOLThey are crap. Faff to put on and will just break. You could try duct taping back of heels.
One horse out for 10 and only pawing with her front left? I doubt it! And out of all the horses she has the least amount of feather.Hay mites?
All the horses live out in our all weather winter pens, unless the weather is vile they come in to dry off.Is she out 24/7?
Would it be worth giving her a feed of mash before she goes out , so then her initial hunger is satisfied and less likely to paw.
My mare is less antsy at getting her hay when she’s had a feed before.
Was also thinking this!Would be interesting to see if oversized/xl bell boots might help

She was fed this morning(big bucket of chaff and her agrobs) and went out and pawed the hay bell and got stuck, again....LOL
Oh she is totally doing this out of boldness, and stands there looking at me as if I did it to her!I am the last person to ever say a horse is doing anything out of badness but... lol![]()
They wouldnt fit over her shoes. Id have to buy bigger ones. Currently wrapping every day with elephant tape.If you have the cavellos anyway - just pop them on and see.
It doesn't sound like you have anything to lose trying that.
