NRW have been and dredged a ditch and dumped all this in my horses fields while I was at work yesterdays (they have a licence I am not landowner) do I need to fence this stuff off? According to my plant identifying app they’re forget me not and calamus.

Horses have just started nosing through the dredged crap so I need to decide if I’m getting back out of my work clothes to remove them from the field 🤦‍♀️

does (1) have a slightly reddish-purple stem lower down? i want to say v. beccabunga, it's a common aquatic marginal in N. europe.

(2) looks like Pseudacorus iris or acorus calamus and I would remove.

nb no guarantees on any/either of this info. I am not an expert.

I’ve just googled pseudacorus iris and I don’t think it’s that as I’ve never seen yellow flowers on them (in 5 years here). Cant see anything saying calamus is toxic to horses? On further googling I actually think it’s just a common reed 🫣 woops .. had a proper panic after NRW just dumped the ditch contents in the field and I had no warning … after an initial root around horses seem to be leaving the mess alone now anyway. God the stress of keeping these animals alive

the toxicity status of calamus is debated - why risk it? Glad they are leaving the mess alone though

Not sure if it's any help - a colleague at work has an app on his phone called Picture This. If he takes a pic of a plant it'll tell him what it is.

Yeah I put my brain back in after the initial “wtf have they dumped in my field” and did some googling instead. Don’t think there’s anything awful in there now based on a less frantic examination

A very good site is this one...
It's American, but not all bad [wicked grin]
It used to be called GardenWeb but is now called Houzz
Aaaannnd! they love people posting with good pictures for them to feast on and work out the ID.
But! it would be very good if posting there to also post here, with what you've found out.
