Does anyone know of any good websites or books that have clear pictures of different feeds, especially types of oats and barley in particular (rolled, whole etc) I can't believe not a single one of my horse books has decent pictures of them!

Thanks in advance.

Hmm, I remember when I did my BHS exams I think one of the books for stage 1 had pictures of this in, can't remember if it was the blue one by Islay Autey or the white one by Hazel Reed (I think), I'd expect it was the blue one. Sorry probably not much help! Surely a horse nutrition book would have pictures?

I do think the best way to learn is to see it in real life though, photos in books can sometimes look different colours etc. I always remember it as; oats are always long, narrow and pointy (and tend to be fed rolled so still have husks on). Barley is generally the roundest and sort of golden in colour, (and when you see it in mixes it won't have a husk) . And wheat is a bit more diamond shaped and browner, again fed without husks (you don't generally buy wheat as a grain on it's own for horse feed, it is generally fed as part of a mix). Hope this helps!

you also need to know the difference between rolled and micronised. rolled is just flat/rolled and micronised has like a grid lines on it.
