Identifying mites?

I think they live under the skin, I noticed my boy had them yesterday, as he was biting his back legs, and stamping them, he has been clear for ten months, so I use frontline pipettes on each leg, large dog size.

When I got him he had lots of scabs from them not being treated.

I'd say watching them attempting to chew the back of their front heels, rubbing the back legs up and down against each other, sometimes difficult to spot as the mites start feeding at dusk/dark so you may not see that if you're not there. Also scabs which aren't like mudfever scabs, horse getting relief if you scratch those areas of the heels where you think they are and also slightly raised thickened areas of skin in the heels.

I had the 2 dectomax jabs 2 weeks apart and they worked a treat and was rather horrified afterwards to see what damage the mites do to the skin though afterwards, hair and scabs sloughing off with lots of dried blood scabs, took several weeks for that to heal.

More from symptoms as anything else would require skin scrapings by the vet. For my mare it's an insatiable itch - she rubs her back legs on anything and everything she can, herself, wheelbarrows, doors etc.

Best treatment I came across was dectomax

You ll not be able to see the mites, as they live within the skin. I too have tried frontline , dectomax and many other things on my 'hairy ' boys. However, cattle pour on 'Paramectin'[ thinks thats the spelling - buy from an agricultural store. It worms/delouses/de manges cattle] seems to have done a good job and the 2 hairies are not stamping/biting at all. I have to say I thought I d tried everything , so to at last get success is a real breakthrough.

Thanks everyone I was having a read about it last night, just wondered really as my boy has stamped his hind a couple of times when I've been at the field. He's not been scratching it on anything that I can tell and he's not biting it either that I can see but I'll have a look for scabs just in case.
He does occasionally stamp anyway but I was just thinking "what if" :)
