Idiot alert! Short girth sizing

I've never had to buy a short girth before (as in for a monoflap saddle)
How do you go about getting the correct size? Its pretty obvious with a regular girth and you can pretty much look and make a good guess but I'm clueless on this one! How much past the elbows ideally would it come?
 
I use bail band to measure it usually. Pop the saddle on, and then measure it a couple/three fingers up from the point of the elbow (judging best you can from back swing of elbow to give clearance if that makes sense?) .. then measure the bail band for the size you need :)
 
Well I usually take 20" off the size of the long girth to work out what size short girth I need. I always aim for the girth to be a couple of holes from the top hole, that way you account for minor weight decreases but the girth is long enough to be well clear of the elbow.
 
A rough guide and a good starting point is to try one 20 inches shorter than your normal girth, then go up or down as required from there. This of course works best if you are able to borrow a couple to try for size. You do need to take into account how far the girth extends beyond the buckles as the different designs do vary. I have two that are the same size buckle to buckle, but the total length of one is 4 inches longer than the other due to this.
