I was walking a german shepherd today, I posted on here about her the other day.
She's not exactly friendly, and can be aggressive with other dogs.
So today I saw someone walking their dog coming towards me, so I put the GSD's lead on and pushed her off the path so that I could hold her out the way.
The guy got level with me, and goes 'its ok, she's friendly, she's 15' I said 'she might be but mine isn't'
He goes 'oh is she aggressive' I said 'she can be'
So he stood there and talked at me for TEN minutes, about the operation the dog has, about going shooting, about where the dog is from etc etc.
Surely if you are walking and you see someone put a dog on a lead and push it off the path, while saying, 'leave it, look at me, leave it!' that isn't an invite to chat!

Alot of dog walkers like to chat

you must of had your dog under control

haha yeah she did surprise me,
she actually stood between me and the other dog, no growling or anything, though she didn't take her eyes off the dog once.
The dog was a 15 year old very quiet dog, never moved or turned round, I think it's a good job it didn't lol.

Yes, I can see why you're pissed off. How absolutely outrageous of him to stop and make polite conversation with you, a professional dog walker, about his dog, for ten whole minutes - goodness me, I would have been fuming!!

As long as the dog behaved OK then I'd see that as a good thing. You can stop and chat to people and have the dog at your side getting it used to other people and dogs etc. To get irritated about it makes me think it was YOU that didn't want the company not the dog!

Its possible that you relaxed a bit whilst you were chatting and therefore the bitch did as well. It would actually have been very good for her to sit there calmly, if you meet people who want to chat I would do it again as long as she is sensible, and lots of praise when you move on again.

One of my dogs can be aggressive to other dogs, I wouldn;t be impressed if someone stopped by us with their dog. I wouldn't do it to someone who said they;re dog might be aggressive...

If the bitch you were walking did not display aggressive behaviour it sounds like a great thing to have happened.

If the bitch is clearly upset and you need to concentrate on her there is nothing wrong with saying "I am sorry to cut you off but this bitch has a problem with other dogs, I am training her and I need to walk away". However, if she is tolerating the situation then you can keep praising and treating her through the conversation for being good and it's the best kind of training!

Your girl was calm? made no overtly aggressive moves? Fantastic. amazing what a bit of in-control socialising can do with lots of praise. Can never get enough. However if the situation was different and your girlie was growling, pulling or outright snarl/barking then it's time for him to walk on to diffuse the situation. It's just recognising where that line is and it's usually blatantly obvious, but not always so. It does very much depend on the other dog too and if that guy was actually paying attention to the 2 of them he'd know - you'd be surprised how many dog owners can chat away but are watching the little furry darlings all the time - much like when we are around horses. Nice to stop and chat but we're always always aware of what our four legged friends are up to

Now if you'd put your girl on a leash and he came round the corner with his dog bounding around off leash - well that's different and that's what would get my back up...

Why isn't the dog muzzled if its aggressive? I'd be more unhappy about a known aggressive dog being walked off the lead where, clearly, other people walk their well socialised, well behaved dogs.

as the owner of another not so friendly gsd ( actually shes scared the worst type of aggression)
i agree with rubysgold. she couldnt have made it more obvious the dogs wasnt freindly.
who wouldve been at fault if anyone/anything got bit ???
i too move out of the way if i meet someone its become a running joke with a few regulars.
if only they could see her at home being beaten up by my jack russel LOL her street cred would be right out of the window !!!
as mine seems to think shes my personal protection shes really only a problem on the lead. off the lead shes happy to play with the jack russel.
