Idiotic comment by Peter Charles!

I would not want to suggest that I know Peter well. Have met him and his family a few times and I have been on one of his yards as a livery a good few years back.

What we saw last night was (in my view) his rather dry sense of humour, I think he was taking the mickey a bit and just trying to get a reaction. Whether he has deeper feelings about eventers and dressage riders I do not know and would not want comment.

That said, I did feel that Tims comment was delivered with much more conviction (about eventing being a hobby) than Peters. I kinda understand what Tim was trying to say but I think the word 'hobby' was a little patronising.

Heh ho......I guess every documentary about every subject will always cause some disagreement amongst its viewers. I just enjoyed watching Jennifer doing so well. And Jack, bless him.

Just watched this after seeing some of the comments on here (on too late for me, have to be in bed by 9) but I thought Peter's comment was tongue in cheek, and also thought editing had something to do with what might have seemed inappropriate comments.

Or maybe I am in a forgiving mood.:)

A lot of the old showjumpers were dry Yorkshiremen. I totally 'got' Peter Charles, I know hundreds of people like him and understand the sense of humour.

Also, what's that saying? Something about a true word spoken in jest... :p :D :D :D

Perhaps not the best audience to showcase his taken out of context humour on mind!

Definately his dry sense of humour - I had a chuckle at that - maybe because I'm a misable old women lol! - I did see an interview with PC after the Olympics and he was quite self deprecating about his first round. I think people need to loosen up a bit!!!!!!!

His comment made me think of the Monty Python sketch about the four yorkshiremen sitting around a table in dinner jackets, drinking expensive wine and competing for who had the poorest upbringing.

And that's not to say I don't like him because I really do but he's dry and I think that gets misunderstood sometimes.
But as others have said when he interviews after he has not done well he is a harsh critic of himself.

"Truth hurts" and the old expression about protesting too much! I had a small bet with myself that there would be a bit of an outcry on here after the programme was aired...result!

well still think it was a shame and didn't come over as being funny. I enjoy the banter between different disciplines it that wasn't amusing!

As a professional, he should have asked himself whether those remarks, even in jest, were a good idea or not. Competing at that level requires more than just riding skills - you need to market yourself to potential owners and sponsors. Piggy French on the other hand came over as warm and friendly.

And not just on here ;) The eventers clearly have very hurt feelings and have not stopped tweeting about it :o

Although joking apart I do think tweets about blowing up Pete's golden postbox with a letter bomb are a bit sick.

I thought that was really rude and a stupid thing too say too. But I wouldn't expect much else - generally showjumpers are very arrogant and not terribly friendly whereas eventers IMO are generally lovely. You only have to go along to your local BSJA and BE events to see it!
