Just got back from a ride with my boy late this afternoon and wherever we ride we have to go on a main road, which is full of idiots, but it's just something we have to do. Anyhow scenario, going down the road on our way home, my boy is ready to go home and forward going but not idiotic, when a car is parked up and I am trying to go round it, cars are coming the other way and the cars coming my way are, surprise surprise not letting me out, so my boy is becoming twitchy, he knows where he is and wants to go home and swings his bum out, and a total knobhead still keeps coming up behind and I hear a thud! God my stomach went. My boy is still walking on and I see damage to the back of the side of car and am walking on thinking this guy will stop!! The car that was behind him is holding back, obviously thinking the driver will stop, but guess what?!! No chance. Off he drives.

By this time me and my boy are 5 mins from home, I can see my boy is OK, there's no blood and he is walking on fine. I get back to the yard, no damage to my boy. He is fine just wants his tea. Then a friend of mine who is walking out with her daughter on her pony gets stopped by the lunatic driver who asks her if he saw my horse and who I was as I have damaged his car!! Ahhhhhh God it makes me mad. She said she didn't see me.

Anyhow after sorting my boy out I came home and have reported it to the police.

Sorry for the rant, just idiotic drivers and luckily no damage to horse and rider just the idiot's car.

Well done if you made it this far down, needed to get it off my chest!!

Thanks

OMG that’s terrible! I’m glad you ned is ok though.

A friend went though exactly the same unfortunately her horse came out quite a bit worse and had a very nasty cut, all because some git was being impatience!

that is utterly discusting!!
I thought my last hack was bad and full of idiots (speeding past just inches away from me/not stopping when i ask/squeezing past when my lad is acting up) i really really hope your lad doesn't feel the effects of it tomorrow and that the driver is sorted out.
It is utterly discusting that drivers behave like this it really is.

Cars seem to have a horrible effect on some people - it is just horrible to see. They seem to turn people from polite, well mannered nice people into horrible, self obsessed, evil power mad lunatics! Ban cars and bring back the cart! That's what I say!

Hope your horsey is ok tomorrow and the horrid man gets a good telling off and feels guilty as hell!

Thanks everyone, he is ok and happily eating his net and ready for bed. Will double check him tomorrow, but I am pretty sure he kicked the car. Good on him!!!

I know cars just turn people into lunatics, the speed of some of them in our area is frightening. Wish it was back to the horse and cart, it would be a lot safer

the exact same thing happened to me and axey a few weeks ago except he didn't make contact with the car, thank god. Stll shook me up though, couldn't believe that soemone will still keep going when there's a horse in the middle of the road and the rider's shouting 'STOP'!

Hope you're ok

I hate going on roads for that reason! 2 summers ago i was hit by a man driving his massive jag on his mobile. My horse cut his leg so badly he nearly had to be PTS but luckily i had put all his boots on which i never used to do! The man was fined and we couldn't claim on his insurance though

My poor guy has never been sound since and its all because that stupid driver driving too fast whilst chatting away! My horse hadn't done a thing wrong! Makes me so mad!

Had a similar experience recently while riding and leading, they could see I was having trouble, and was asking them to stop, but nope, just squeazed by, the passenger was shrinking away from the door as they were so close, luckily they didn't hit us, and didn't even appologise. This was on a country road, but quite a wide one, I much prefer narrow lanes now... The couple were old too, so its not just a boy racer thing.
Glad your boy is ok, what did the police say?

Because I didn't get the whole number plate as I was so shocked, they just logged it as a complaint and gave me a reference number. They were really good actually and thanked me for ringing it through. The lady that took the call said she hoped the car was damaged!!

As someone that has ridden on the roads for many years I feel qualified to give you some advice. The first thing is always for you and your horse to wear fluorescent Hi-Viz when riding on the roads and the second is take the BHS Road Safety Course and Exam as this will arm you with a lot of new skills including how to instruct other road users to stop so that you can carry out a manouvre safely. (If a driver fails to obey your command then they are commitiing an offence).

If you are involved in an accident in which you or your horse suffer an injury be it phsical or mental then you should always take out a private prosecution against the motorist in which case if you are successful their insurers are forced to pay out.

Hope this helps.

You were very lucky, glad your horse is ok though. I have had a couple of close shaves with cretins like this who literally try to push past your horse as if it will go "oh, terribly sorry, I'll just move out of the way for you.."

(We wear flouro vest and leg bands every time we ride on the road.)

I am afraid I would have turned the air blue if this happened to me!! So many drivers ignore commands - like, 'stop' because you can see a car coming around the corner towards you bu the idiot behind still overtakes on a blind bend!

The BHS advise us to ride defensively and position ourselves where the driver is forced to wait behind until it is safe to get past but to be honest, I wouldn't be suprised if some maniac just drove right up my horse bum just to get us out of the way.
