Where do we start? What height? pony is 14.2 rider is 13yrs.

When it says about winnings what does it mean 'notional' and 'actual' ?

Is the pony already registered ??? has it jumped BSJA before ??

Start at BN !!

Start at BN if you can. Pony will be classed as a 148cm. As Buster said the actual winnings are what you take home on the day and the notional are what are used to calculate what the horse can jump. The more money you win the higher you have to jump. The notional winnings are calculated by the height of the class and the number of entrants.

I have phoned the bsja up and person at end of phone was really interested when I said I couldn't make head nor tail of their schedules/rule book etc. I asked them for an idiot's guide to get started, so phone them up and ask - one more person might make a difference...

I had the same problem - where to start, what are all the different names (blue chip, coral, sapphire etc etc!!) Years ago entered child and pony in a 128cm pony class thinking that would be smaller than British Novice - wrong!

I have sort of got my head round it - the British Novice are the lowest, but if pony already has winnings you might have to start at higher level or go hc. Some centres offer small open classes which are a set height (might be only 80cm or 90cm so quite jumpable) and no winnings limit so could do those to start with.

Where are you near? Some centres are more helpful than others when you say you want to do bsja, and some do a free ticket (normally about £6) if you want to try before affiliating (think Keysoe has one coming up...).

Where you start depends on whether pony has been registered before and if it has won money. It is the notional winnings that are used to grade the pony e.g if he has won less than £100 notional, then he can be entered in British Novice classes which are 85cm. Many centres run open classes lower than this. Arena UK have got a few junior shows coming up but they can get quite busy especially as they have some qualifiers for Scope etc. Good luck!

They have lowered the pony BN height to 80 and introduced a discovery @ 90cm to bridge the gap between BN & new.

Juniors now go.....

BN - 80cms
Disco - 90cms
New - 1m
Fox - 1.10m

there are also many opens and other quailifers that run during the year.
